bit late with this post but anyhoo
im from Scotland where trick or treating originated but you crazy Americans changed it.
In Scotland its called "guising" because you wear a disguise, if you go guising you'r a guiser!. Kids go from door to door to earn treats by
performing. We used to tell jokes, some might sing a song or do something else. You don't get anything if you don't perform.
Scots & Irish immigrants took guising with them to america but it was only done by those communities. It emerged as "trick or treating" in America in
the 1950s minus the performance replaced by the idle threat.
kids still go guising at Halloween in Scotland and must perform or they get nothing
