The cornerstone of a consumerism society is having a large enough population, with enough wealth distributed among the people, to keep the volume of
traded currency high. in order to facilitate a constantly growing economy.
We don't have that wealth distribution anymore, and as taxes have progressively diminished over the last 40 years, it's safe to say that "lowering
taxes for the rich" just doesn't work.
