This is an excellent addition to your other thread, Corruption, thanks for all this other information. Another sad fact is that the average person doesn't know what their country deems "suspicious". I have seen some compiled lists of some pretty random "suspicious" activities in the USA. I have to look further into the Canadian government websites and see what I can compile. What worries me is when the UN says "worldwide internet surveillance" I don't know if they mean on a local level (RCMP), Federal Level, or ACTUALLY a global level. A global level... that is frightening... Imagine one central collection center gathering data on every internet users daily activities with a global anti-cyberterror unit ready to dispatch at any moment. (May be a little far-fetched but this IS ATS after all)

Ok, let's not get our panties in a bunch quite yet. The UN has no authority over your ISP. Your ISP is a business just like any other business, and pays it's taxes just like anyone else.

The US Congress would have to pass a bill to regulate ISPs. Ok, we watch for those, like SOPA, and fight tooth and nail at the local level to make sure those bills don't get passed.

I'm one of those from the pre-interweb days. I'm 44. All we had back then were BBSs to dial-up into at 300 bytes per second. So calm down.

Technology evolves, and so does the software. Remember Kazaa? It was file sharing software, and they took it down, but 20 other file sharing systems took it's place. Open source software tends to change to meet the need, unlike commercial software which changes to meet the demand.

The point?

We are going to see an evolution in our web browsers, and in the ways we surf the internet, brought about by open source products, made by the people, for the people, who care not to be monitored.

This monitoring crap wasn't an issue in the early days, heck, they were just trying to make a set of RFCs that everyone could comply with, and standardize everything. Well, that's done, and now we are faced with considerations that weren't present at the beginning, and now, our computers and broadbands are fast enough to step up to the next level. We'll see software that gives us our privacy become standard.

Unless, of course, they pass a law that makes, for example, "Firefox 23 with encryption" illegal.

And they simply can't go that far.

Dude.. your preaching to the choir. If it were only that straight forward. It's Not. Ever notice how when the Gov tries to tell you you need to protect yourself from identify theft they turn around and condemn the very technologies you use to protect yourself? They all speak with forked tongues. Your right, open source software is the key because we can see and compile the code ourselves to be sure there are no backdoors but you can never trust the system to be under control enough that you can rely on that technology. Next thing you know they will change something, some aspect that makes that technology no longer viable. You have to keep abreast of the changing times or you will get caught. Unless all mainstream internet users learn to think like hackers, they are going to be stopped dead in their tracks.

You and I (also 44), grew up with these changes. We have seen how the internet evolved. Tons of people today don't understand what we have seen. We have to protect them sometimes from their government, sometimes from themselves.

I remember an internet with BBS's and dial in dating systems like Dial Your Match, Library systems connected through telenet and Hypertelnet. Those were the golden days of internet before commercialism took over. It was the very beginnings of the world wide web and it was FREE. ideas, collaborations, no commercialism's to get in out ways.. just the simple sharing of ideas to grow humanity. The WWW or the Graphical Web ruined it. Now you can suddenly stream pictures and video.. get news in real time. the commercialism of the Internet was the death stroke that allowed corruption and government control into the fold. The graphical web and www as we know it has been manipulated from the beginning. We failed to see it then, now, we have to be their saviors. We Know whats coming. We have lived through it. These kids today have no clue.

Ah, yah, the mainstream users. Oops.

I was talking about people like you, who actually understand how the interwebs work. (BTW, I liked your methods, mentioned earlier.)

Anyhoo, what's this other thread CE has that people keep mentioning?

Found that link and left a comment already.

My opinion of you doesn't change.
Your one of probably a handful of people here who know what they are talking about when it comes to how they can actually censor and how to avoid it. Then again, that would make you a terrorist, aye?

I won't say the commercialization was a bad thing, at first, but during the .com land grab, prices got way over-inflated (because of greed), and therefore the government saw all that untapped revenue rushing by.

It all boils down to control.

I tend to echo your sentiments about protecting the kids, the people who need and benefit from the internet, but face it, every tom, dick, and harry has access now. And yes, they know nothing about what they are doing. I repair computers on the side, and answer customer's question, and help explain technology to them while they listen with glazed eyes.

The cat is out of the bag. Corruption is seated in. There are innocent people involved. All of that is true, but the solution is not to strip search everyone who wants to logon and check their email. (Unlike getting on an airplane...)

I understand how the use of 'hot' words might bring attention to eyes of certain 'monitors'. I can assume even further that this is not a concept we aren't already familiar with. The government has been monitoring internet activites for some time now. However, with this UN proposal, we'll see wide scale job creation by the government for the purposes of large centers exploring every part of the web. Unfortunately there just simply aren't enough people with the technical skills to hack through every door of every web portal, and further more even if a single person hacks a set amount of sites to gain access to private messaging system, it would take large amounts of people to create data on it.

I'm not to worried about this 'monitoring' activity, but what I am worried about it the locking out of sites like a school or business would do but on an ISP level. Through that way the could easily control the flow of data and media. We'd no longer be able to access foreign websites, and vice versa. Countries would be divided into internet zones. Facebook which would be transnational communicator would have web districts, disallowing certain areas to contact other areas, however if that's the case, wouldn't people just make international phone calls?

Actually in a way, if they could create a dampened system to the same extent that televised media is, I would be thoroughly impressed. If it happens, it certainly won't come from the plethora of bright minds we have here in America.

all speculation though. S&F

I guess there is no sense on focusing on the American Government. It would be more constructive and more inviting if we went after the UN.

We can all agree that the UN is an enemy of the people of the world. Those that are not aware can be convinced and nobody should be offended because most western nations throw a fair amount in so we all have responsibilty.

I think we are all sick of living in Bizarro World where good is bad and bad is good.

You're right. 'Focus' is the wrong word. I believe the appropriate verb is 'target'.

As far as the UN go, they don't count. It's simply an offshore account for the power freaks that broke free of their junior days in power as national stage pols. A sort of zionist haven. They should all be nuked, except they have no location....by design.

u.n is a terrorist organization. all they do is drum up fear all day long, isnt that the definition of terrorism now?

49. There is currently no comprehensive United Nations treaty on terrorism that is
applicable to an exhaustive list of the manifestations of terrorism. Similarly, the international
community has yet to agree on an internationally binding definition of the
term “terrorism”, owing largely to the difficulty of devising a universally acceptable
legal categorization for acts of violence committed by States, by armed groups such as
liberation or self-determination movements or by individuals.

~ THE USE OF THE INTERNET FOR TERRORIST PURPOSES, pg 18

Defining terrorism is quite simple really. If a person or persons cause harm or loss to a large number of people, they have committed an act of terrorism. The hard part is really deciding how many people need to be harmed before it goes from assault to terrorism, but that's not very difficult. They just love over-complicating it and making it mean anything they want it to mean. For example releasing "terrorist propaganda" is not terrorism, because no one is harmed in the process... in fact it's more akin to free speech, they're allowed to present their perspective and opinions.

Anyway, it's impossible to stop terrorists from accessing the internet and it's impossible to censor their "propaganda", because there are simply too many powerful P2P network which will retain data for extremely long periods of time and the Government can do nothing about it no matter how much they want to.

These people are unbelievable.

What- they dont think terrorists can use phones when the internet gets guarded?

Since when did the UN have authority over the Internet?

They were never granted any powers, cause they dont need to monitor the internet for boogeymen.

They just need to find new terrorists is all. Remember- Osama is gone- so should be the war on terror(holds back laughter).

I really do think that people need to remind their govts just who it is they are working for and WHY.

In my day to day life- I dont come across many terrorists- so why do they insist I be afraid of them with every ounce of fear in my body?

Time for the Dark Net

I understand that most Americans don't care what the UN thinks, but they should care that the UN and the US are actively pursuing similar agendas on internet issues and this is a global concern, not just American.

I believe the fact that all these nations and organizations are working together towards a common goal of controlling the internet under the disguise of protecting us from terrorists should concern Americans and everyone throughout the world.

Ditto. We as peoples of our respective countries have a chance here to come together as One to fight these things as much as we can. I am generally against a one world government that seeks to control us all but if we make a Peoples Movement, perhaps a website called something like UN Watch.com where we can all join to combat the UN, then this will bring our peoples closer together to work for a common goal. It will help us to break down the boundaries that seek to keep us apart. Not a government that seeks control, but a unification for the greater good of all by the people.

Heck, it would be nice if we could have a big island someplace to go start our own country away from all this tyranny.

LOL.. I just looked for my made up name and there already is a unwatch.com unwatch.com...

If Americans do not care about what the UN does it's only because they have been lulled into a false sense of security. People need to wake up as everything they do effects us all.

It's funny that someone already came up with a site with the same name and general intentions you would have had on your site!

There are plenty of other names to choose from.

I hope you don't mind if I post the link to your new thread as it has a lot to do with what was discussed in this thread... Secret Shadow Government Found: It's the U.N. and The U.N. IS your worst Nightmare !

Check it out people it's a good read.

To control the flow of information in the world is more important that controlling all the money. Information is the new currency so naturally the UN wants to regulate and tax it.
