Gonna date myself somewhat here but... I was in public school in small town Ontario back in the 70's. I remember the Lords Prayer recited and God Save the Queen song by the class every day after the morning bell. We had a specific hour every day for a coarse called "Religious Knowledge". It was Christian based and that was the extent of my religious teachings. Now this was a small town school and one teacher taught all subjects in our class. Perhaps she put her own spin into her religious coarse but it did not overly affect my opinion of Christianity. I feel that a broader covering of world religions would have benefited us more as since then immigration to Canada has brought all these religions to our neighborhoods. As an adult I feel rather ignorant when talking to people of other cultures and religions and try to educate myself to better understand their mindset. I think it is better to have the knowledge presented to them than not have a clue and appear ignorant and intolerant.

Religions never really used to matter in the west, because our society was dominated by a denomination of christianity.

Now that we have a very multi-cultural society, it is important to know what some people believe, and why.

After all, they are part of SOCIETY.

Geez, if it hurts you so badly, change his school and be proud that your kid won't learn something extra at a young age.

It won't help, ALL SCHOOLS in Canada has social studies, which include world religions, yup even catholic school teach world religions.

Only option the OP has is home school, but imo, i think home school does not prepare for current social lifestyle.

Well the school must be participating in an experimental program with these books, because my son said something, he's a bit shy so he didn't get into any detail, just something about mom disagreeing with this text going into so much religious detail. Which is not the key issue, but one of them. The key issue is everything is about Freedom and Equality, all the corruption in the world, whether it be in our countries, or third world, or Corrupt distortions in world religions, ie. Vatican and the control grid, the lies, or Theocracy, the Slave system of this planet basically. The key issues of this text violating our educational system and constitution all boils Freedom and Equality which is what I've been about all my life since being a toddler, and my mother, grandfather, out of our whole family.

The school is modifying his social studies. He doesn't have to participate in this information for his grade. I found that odd, as if they are expecting some parents to speak up. Now we live in a Christian Mennonite Community, alot of Church's and good farming community as well. Its actually nice, good people generally. We don't attend Church, but I can see teachers may have experienced Christians speaking up, and lumped me into the same category, when I see something that is coming from UN, to our school systems, affecting our Canadian constitutional secular state, and soft peddling Islam.

I know alot of people fail to realize we're in a Fourth Reicht, of sorts, and Hitler and Banna, have quite a connection. The Muslim Brotherhood is a CIA tool, not just CIA either, Mossad, TPTB in general. They like Sharia. Not just Obama. Bush liked Sharia. The house of winsor like's Sharia. The Rockefeller's, Kissingers, DuPont's, Rothchild's, the POPE and Vatican, the entire PTB structure love sharia. Its a serfdom reset.

What they HATE IS FREEDOM AND EQUALITY!

I understand what is going on.

We have a Secual Constitution with High Human Rights, that would ensure a quality, unslanted education. Its a Canadian one, not a US one, and not a UN one, not a HOMOGENIZED one, and not pro religious slave pens. Hurry up livestock, get back to your respective religious cages!!!!

And put those women under veils!

NOT ON MY WATCH!

I just got my dad to sit down and shared parts of this text and he agreed that this was totally inappropriate and that it was good to inform/write to his teacher, the principal, that this book was not suitable for a grade 8 social studies course. He said that it seemed to be a little glowing on the Islam part, which he found odd, perhaps to promote tolerance. But he also agreed that tolerance is only race, not custom or tolerating things that are crimes and very wrong to tolerate in any form, such as abuse and inequality of women, forced theocracy and religious courts, stoning and burying people alive at the orders of Imams who have authority over secular law, fascism of any kind, forcing dress code on children, marriage, religion on children. These things are crimes against humanity. Tolerating them is completely wrong. Tolerance is only about racism, and sexual identity, and rights for minorities, and the poor.

He said any mention of God or Mohummad or religious figures in a history or social studies course (therefore giving them credence and substance as if they are real) is extremely innapropriate, for this is mythology, there is no proof of any of these things being real.

If in grade 11 or 12 you want to take religous studies, then go for it, but its not social studies and that was very wrong.

My father was a really good teacher, he did individualized course material, ahead of his time, and got every student in his classrooms reading and brought all their grades up. He used to have ex students interrupt our outings to tell him what a wonderful teacher he was and how he turned their lives around. He was also very helpful to the other teachers and outlined course material quickly for many others, very intelligent and competent.

And its right to speak up and let them know this text and social studies is inappropriate and tolerance has nothing to do with tolerating inequality or crimes or abuse of anyone.

Seems you don't know the difference between tolerance and inequality and crimes. I love it when the dark and insiduous programming of the elite here is to make it impossible to speak up and out against inequality without immediately being told your intolerant. Well I guess you're right, its a SIN TO TOLERATE INEQUALITY. There you go. But as for racism, I'm not even racist against a rather unfortunate tribe of pigmy's that is so interbred they have what looks osterich feet. We're all born in one body suit or another, and every soul on this planet is greater than thousands upon thousands of superman. What they're trying to do is strip the progression from souls. Progression = growth in consciousness, including compassion, awareness, equality, deprogramming from the ISMS, and overcoming weaknesses in ourselves such as crankiness, anger, retaliation, greed, violence, abuse, apathy, Love Of Power.

This is about a totally inppropriate education being forced on our children in a country where our education was top notch, and secular, and in a way, that is sickening, actually discussing inequality and sexism.

Sorry, as a Canadian with intelligence, education, from a very good family that fostered critical thinking from an early age. My father a science teacher. His brother a physicist who was going to Australia to one of the 3 nuclear fusion plants in the world, but bailed because he discovered, I guess, that TPTB aren't good people??? Always wondered. Anyway he headed up North in BC and also became a computer, science teacher and built a huge ham radio and talked to astronauts in space, was the head of the Canadian Ham Radio Association off and on for years. We don't tolerate racism, sexism, any inequality directed against sexual orientation, and stand up for what is right.

Its everyone's duty to pay attention.

And when it comes to the kids, their education, this is is a priority.

Basically your words are distorted and a lie, and bear false testimony against me. We all create tabs here in the earth school, and unless we work through our lessons here, we have to pay them in full. I forgive you though.

you are ignorant.. and it is unfortunate you wish your children to be ignorant too.. You say you have no tolerance for inequality yet you'll tolerate it when it comes to the education of your child.. For 18 pages people have asked you specifics and you refused to answer.. you have spewed your hatred for 18 pages and lie and call it peace and love for all of mankind.. I call bull# on you and your belief system.... I feel sorry for people like you I truly do.. i hope your make believe world works out for you.. do say hi to the men in black and the non human hybrids..

i really hate when it double post... My point is you don't have to agree or disagree on information everyone should know and be taught. I personally don't condone all sharia law but I do know and I am informed of what it is and how it varies from region to region sect to sect...( all mankind are under laws be the moral, religious or government) to deprive yourself of knowledge does not benefit anyone at anytime for any reason and the fact that your still harping about how right you are and how wrong everyone else is ought to give you pause in maybe learning more.

I don't agree with the communist in china... but you better believe i'm gonna let my kids learn about it and it has nothing to do with the fact the are athiest and I may or may not agree with that or their system.. The children need to know how it works and how all societies work. HENCE SOCIAL STUDIES.

What you just said is not even allowed according to ATS policies. Tolerance is only race, its not about tolerating crimes, sexual abuse of children or injustice. I don't have to tolerate any persons beliefs, when those beliefs harm others.

What I quoted about women's place and needing and escort, and asking questions of students, had no place in any Canadian textbook.

When I read posts like yours, I see extreme programming and a lack of critical thinking.

"One thing I note all the time is the odd vehicles I pick up within a few blocks of driving every day I go anywhere, with these odd liscence plates. The vehicles are very well heeled, todays was blackish, maybe a midnight grey. It was a bit like a cross between a hearse and a SUV. With beautiful shaped body. Ritzy. Liscence a form of 9/11, one of the forms, and the lovely V. That one seemed to appear out of nowhere on my outing, in both directions, got ahead of me on the way home so I could read its license plate. This is not just once in a while, fairly frequent. But today, both ways, that in front of me and a police car on the tail all the way home, seemed a little funny. " end quote of Unity_99

This is almost a classic symptom of a psychotic break. Please call somebody you trust who is not into all the new age stuff you are and tell them exactly what is quoted up there.

Please, from a fellow Canadian, and someone who has read your posts before.

For your son.

Yes, I second this, and from the perspective of someone who has experienced it.
Weirdly, I also got a lot of random feedback that reinforced my delusions, ie, I was right and everyone else wrong.

Thank you worlds_away; I was trying to make this point earlier, but I didn't express it nearly as well.

This thread has made me chuckle quite a few times since reading through it all, I cannot believe the OP has such an issue with information about the teachings of different religions being shared with their child.
My son is nearly 15 and his school doesn't have 'religious education', they have 'philosophy and applied ethics' which basically discusses im/a/morality with or without the differing faiths of the world, while providing awareness of the often contradictory teachings between the various religions. Although as someone who doesn't believe in any gods I'm still glad my son has a basic understanding of the many different religions of the world, especially if it helps him make his own mind up that 'from Animism to Zoroastrianism ...urm...they can't all be right, so who is wrong...maybe they all are'.

I really don't understand the problem with information being shared to children about what other people believe.
I would have issues with any school teaching my lad that X or Y religious message is 'true', but this appears to be just an example of a curriculum passing knowledge about different religions to their students.
If anyone honestly thinks there is something sinister behind that, well, the word 'zealot' comes quickly to my mind.

...perhaps knowledge of the beliefs of differing religions is threatening in some way to the OP, but if the OP's case for their own personal faith is strong enough why would they feel threatened? Doubts over validity of argument perhaps?

After reading some inappropriate discussions on the Ottoman Empire, the wording expressing how fair they were to the average peasant, and odd activity questions.

Then it goes into India. A mixture of spiritual, poetry, history, somewhat interesting. But then:

p. 352:

What Do You Think?

--- Why does discrimination against certain groups of people continue even after the government has declared it illegal? What should be the penalty for discrimination?

(does that include against women and children and freedom?)

---Name groups of people in North America who have suffered discrimination. How long have they suffered? What steps, if any, have been taken to stop this discrimination?

---People with no caste are often converts to other religions such as Christianity and Islam. Can you explain why?

and What do You think on page 355

---The largest Canadian cities have only a few hundred Jains. Why would it be important for young Jains to meet up and talk with others about the principles of their faith?

p. 357

---Find out how Canadian Sikhs who joined the RCMP fought for the right to wear turbans. Why was this issue so important to Sikh RCMP officers?

And then off to the Muslim Conquest, this has more Arabic content than any other region.

OH, but Chapter 13: China: The World Power!

The common person is the only true power there is!

Religion, soft peddling empires, but really putting down any empire from the other side, the Crusades and Arabic rule of Europe was painted in a rosy light, but the Spanish Inquisition was so unfair, (its all ugliness).

This is the UN's idea of tolerance.

Again, understanding cultures of others, and tolerance of modern inequality are two completely different things.

Some of us don't think turbans are appropriate as police uniform apparel.

I'm going to make the school aware of the flaws in this book, and bring up this inappropriate text in social studies, however, there are so many parts in it that are in depth and interesting, some parts I wish we had had, but not with the distortions. But I don't want him to be not informed, just that we keep up on this course and can teach the difference between facts and myths, religious figures involve myths, things not proven as historical fact.

And I think I'm going to point out that they need to pay attention to who is assigning Canadian students their course material and bring up topics in school about what tolerance means.

This thread really demonstrated many don't understand that tolerance has nothing to do with tolerance of fascist countries (theocracies included) and criminal inequalities and child marriages, polygamy, enforced customs, and alot of other things that is criminal to ever allow. These things are not equal. People are equal. Customs are not.

Yep, the word 'zealot' is coming quickly to my mind.
The day an amputated limb is re-grown (or other such amazing stuff happens) then I shall believe whichever religious strand claims the miracle.
Until then, I'm happy for my son to learn about all the various untestable and opposing beliefs people hold throughout the world...he can make his own mind up as to how outlandish or ridiculous they may or may not appear to be.

For the past year, you've been telling us all that life is a 'school.' We're here to 'learn' so we can 'ascend' and join all the other species and space brothers out there.

Don't you feel some sense of irony in this thread's context that knowledge of other belief systems should be criminalised (your words)? Is it at all possible that some of the extremist views that are held by some Muslims is an outcome of the fact they aren't taught anything about us? If so, is it not similarly extremist to want the teaching of knowledge of other cultures banned as a criminal offence?

BTW - In recent weeks, some of your posts have shown a thoughtful side that suits you. I've starred them.
