It should be pretty damning that someone in Germany feels that the coverage is too much. What is making him see it as too much coverage if it is not inundating him, too?

Kinda like saying a rape victim is getting too much coverage. A woman just got raped, and the best thing you can say is, "They're paying too much attention to her"?

I wanted to address this individually because you have stumbled into exactly what I have been saying.

In England there are 300 people accusing a deceased pop star and his royal friends of molesting them. Of molesting dead bodies. And of molesting mentally infirm children who are unable to report it (meaning 300 is not even scratching the surface).

So yes....people have been raped. And Sandy coverage is displacing that story.

If helping is the concern then the media would spend more time on shelters, preparedness, travel routes, contacting help than they do on action shots of waves crashing and scary satellite images of a giant red blob covering your state.

Do you suppose there might be a difference between local and national news?

I have people 30 minutes outside NYC - they're getting more than just newscasters in front of breaking waves

For the duration I had NBC Channel 4 NYC and WTNH Channel 8 CT playing. With the exception of WTNH interviewing one guy standing in an empty shelter it was all footage of waves and water.

There wasnt any useful information that could increase the survivability of anyone watching being broadcast.

Just doom porn and attempts at shock footage.

Oh, so the standard is, "If you're that stupid, we have no sympathy for you"?

You people are absolutely f***ing heartless. ATS, I cannot believe your lack of compassion. You have no excuse. When you people start complaining about taxes or medicare, then I'm going to point out your stupidity in voting or choosing the wrong plan and say, "Sorry, no sympathy."

Jesus Christ, when will you guys learn? But when the next war crops up, who will you go to first? "AMerica, please help us!"

"Hmm, remember Sandy? That was a really compassionate show right there. I don't know, you seemed pretty sincere when you were griping about the wusses that were stuck in Jersey...yeah, I don't think so. You're on your on in this one."

I really hope that's how the conversation goes. If you can't afford to show a little compassion for something as "small" as a hurricane, then I see no reason why we shouldn't return the same respect, regardless of the situation. It's a two way road, people, and we've pulled everyone of your butts out of the fire before. Who knows, maybe if it weren't for us, you would never have existed.

But a hurricane is too much for you. Not deserving of your compassion and prayer. I see how that is. Humans truly are disgusting.

Oh, that picture wasn't good enough for you? Let's try this one, an image of a New York street uploaded 19 hours ago, in the midst of being hit by Sandy:

Is that still undeserving of your respect and sympathy?

That is entirely beside the point. I have made myself clear on this matter, and if you ATSers still think Sandy is a pithy storm and everyone is overemotional for worrying about those caught in its path, then may all the higher powers have mercy on your souls, because I certainly don't.

I can only imagine what it's like out there, and it appears your imaginations and televisions and Google searches aren't compelling enough. Don't expect my sympathy when the government screws you over, because the government is a breeze compared to mother nature when she's on the rag.

Have fun sitting in your nice dry houses complaining about sensationalists worry for those who no longer HAVE houses. Or cars. Or anything.

Yes that is what I said. Glad to see you have paid such good attention to my countless post on this topic and didnt cherry pick one to jump on

Wtf are you talking about? I live here!

"Hmm, remember Sandy? That was a really compassionate show right there. I don't know, you seemed pretty sincere when you were griping about the wusses that were stuck in Jersey...yeah, I don't think so. You're on your on in this one."

This was a Cat 1 hurricane. It is about as amusing to me as it is to people in the Northeast when people in the South freak out over a dusting of snow.

Fact is this... the media hyped it up. They claimed 60-70 million without power. The reality? 7 million. That is hype and you can not hide that fact.

But a hurricane is too much for you. Not deserving of your compassion and prayer. I see how that is. Humans truly are disgusting.

edit on 30-10-2012 by AfterInfinity because: (no reason given)

Wrong again. They are deserving of compassion. I am at a complete loss trying to figure out what you are going on about. This thread is about the media hype. I said it a million times already, and I will say it again just for you....

This was a hurricane. There was going to be flooding, there was going to be damage, but people did not have to die. If the media reported the FACTS and the DATA which I posted right here on ATS and got blasted for doing so, you would not have to see the loss of human life.

When the media plays up the fear levels, and then nothing happens, the next time they do it and the warnings should be heeded people will not listen. I heard it from my friends in PA and NY prior to this storm. "Irene was nothing, why should I care now?"

Want to guess what will happen next time? People will remember that this Storm was not the end of the world storm that the media portrayed it out to be, and they will not get out of the way when they should. You can see it already from this storm. People, like the poster who took a pic of water at his door in Brigantine, probably refused to leave this time due to the hype from Irene. Yet this time he should have listened. The data told us there would be a 6-12 foot storm surge (originally reported as 20 feet), and that person should have known that since he was living on the coast, right by the ocean, that the storm surge would have an effect. Yet it was disregarded, why? Because the media pumped up Irene and was wrong then.

What is so hard to grasp about this concept?

And what part of New York is that? That wouldn't be one of the many parts of New York that is barely above sea level would it?

So live coverage is now called 'shock footage'?

I can think of a number of times where people shed tears over shock footage that wasn't even accurate. And these accurate video clips of actual damage done by the storm is met with dry eyes and stiff lips?

This is unbelievable. All we need now is the President going, "Meh, it'll pass." BUT WAIT!! The President himself, with the elections only weeks away, has decided to devote his time and effort to the well-being of those victims.

Are you telling me that the "worst President in history" has more compassion than ATS, despite the fact he's potentially losing what little time he has left in the office?

Now THAT puts things in perspective!

Considering I live here in Louisiana, probably a lot more than you do. How do you think I know that the homes in flood prone areas are built on stilts here? Think I made that up?

Is that what you think sir?

I would hope so since that is what we were discussing. Unless you are intentionally posting pics of a complete separate storm from what we were discussing in an attempt to mislead.

So which one is it?

No, it isn't.

You've specifially stated a you and a we, and said clearly that we've bailed you out and then when you come to ask us for help, we won't.

I don't think asking you to define your terms is an unreasonable request or beside the point.

Who wouldn't have existed without you? Who's butts have you pulled from the fire?

It is when the reporter is wading 15 feet into the ocean and the cameraman is pointing his shot into the wind to get all the foam and spray.

Where was the useful coverage?

Like I said in an earlier post. If the media cared so much about the publics safety they would spend more time in that half hour broadcast block on shelters, travel routes, how to get assistance, etc... rather than "oohh look at this parking garage fill with water" and "let's check in with our idiot man at the scene standing in the ocean."

They arent trying to help anyone. Just grab ratings when they can and build up stock footage for awards.

Seems an awful lot of people are too caught up in the emotion and excitement rather than the reality of it all.

Yeah, it sucks to have your house flooded. So we fix it and move on. What does a million people feeling sad about a situation accomplish?

It's nice to some can see the wood through the trees on here. The Saville case just as I predicted has taken a back seat and like the crimes at the jersey care home will be white washed to save any embarrassment to the British stablishment. Meanwhile Hurricane Sandy killed over 30 people in the Caribbean, but the msm was pretty quiet about that loss of life.

Anyway back to the main story.

Why does that matter? Does that mean you have no sympathy? If I accidentally get caught in a fire because I forgot to turn off the stove, does that mean you won't have any empathy for me?

You are all monsters if you turn your backs with so little cause. Despite the reasons, these people are in trouble, and they are facing a very difficult time. WHO CARES WHOSE FAULT IT IS?!?!?! The fact is, they will be having a very touch time over the next few weeks, and you can't find it in your hearts to care. Not even a little.

One can judge a man by how he treats those he views as inferior. If you cannot spare compassion for these people, how can you expect compassion to be shown to you? I expected better, ATS. I thought you weren't just above top secret. I thought you were above judgment. And here you are, judging the citizens of the east coast because of their mistakes and refusing sympathy on those grounds, as though they aren't very dearly paying for their oversights already. And believe me, they are paying very severely. If you set fire to the entire neighborhood, you couldn't do a better job. But still, you judge. Judges, thou shalt be judged.

How can you expect sympathy, if you are unwilling to give it? I'm done here. I can't take any more of the callousness that has reared its ugly head in this thread. I have seen your true character, denizens of ATS. I have learned because of it. Have a nice day.

Why are you changing the subject?

I asked you a direct question. I have extended you the courtesy of answering every question you have posed to me. Do I not deserve that same courtesy in return?

Fact is this, I used Gustav as an example to make my point. You responded with a picture. I replied back to you and now you are suggesting that your pic is from some other storm entirely. So are you purposely misleading us all?

Answer my questions, and I will be more than happy to answer yours as I have been doing. Ignore and disregard my points, and I will simply disregard you. I have no interest in participating in an exercise in futility. However, if you intend to have an open discussion on the topic at hand, I am more than willing to do so provided you extend to me the same courtesy I have extended to you Sir.
