Rain accumulations of up to 12 inches and heavy snowfall inland are considered likely in some areas. As it merges with an Arctic jet stream, forecasters said Sandy has all the ingredients to transform into a "super storm" unlike anything seen over the eastern United States in decades.
On its current projected track, Sandy could make U.S. landfall on Monday night or Tuesday morning anywhere between Maryland and southern New England, forecasters said. Some computer models showed a likely landfall between Delaware and the New York/New Jersey area.
Sandy continued to grow in size with tropical storm-force winds extending across 700 miles. More powerful hurricane force winds extended 105 miles from its center, increasing the risk of downed trees and power lines, forecasters said.
"The winds... expected to be at or near hurricane strength at landfall... will spread inland for hundreds of miles either side of the storm center," according to a blog posted on Weather Underground (www.wunderground.com) by veteran weather forecaster Bryan Norcross.
"It's hard to imagine how millions of people are not going to be without power for an extended period of time," he added.

Folks, I've had a bad feeling about this impending storm for days, at my age you feel it in your bones. The East coast is going to get hammered, maybe as far west as Ohio. We're talking flooding, high winds, extensive power outages and as much as a 10' storm surge.
I've never made a thread about bad weather before but I feel sure this one will be a rough ride and I'd like to think my ATS friends are ready as much as is possible.
Have a backup place to go if you live in a flood-prone area and leave before things get too rough.
Check the forecasts often and get what you need now, waiting might be too late.
Do you have?:
Flashlights
Candles
Batteries
Lamp oil
propane
Ice
Medications
Food
Water
generator/fuel
cards/books/games - no internet!!
Are your gutters clean? Full tank of gas in your car?
Check in with this thread and let everyone know how you've been making out as the storm progresses. They're saying it could last as long as 2 days. Let us know any tips you might have found handy during the storm.
Best of luck everyone, may God watch over you all.
Whatever happens folks, make the best of it -

I don't think this will really be that bad! At least i hope not! Most of the time storms like this end up turning out to sea! I just was on the Weather channel and it looks more like a tropical storm then a hurricane! I was thinking that this would be the best time for our enemies to drop Vieja! With the high tides, a hurricane bearing down on us and a tsunami to finish us off, I could not imagine a more devastating event! Well lets just hope we have at least till doomsday!

Sandy's going to take out the Northeast. Bayou Corn is going to take out the South. Yellowstone and EQ's are going to take out the West. All we're going to be left with is the "Isthmus of America" somewhere down the middle.edit on 27-10-2012 by SilverWraith because: can't spell

Central PA here, after last year's catastrophe no one is taking any chances. I don't know that it will rain as heavily as it did, but its certainly not worth the risk. Everyone who was alive for the first major flood said it was worse than Agnes. I stood at the edge of the river and watched it rise, there is no harm in taking a few precautions this time around.
