I know that a few here would scoff on prayers and anything religious, but fact is...since 2010, many prayers by the american religious faithfuls had stopped a few natural disasters, and at least limited the numbers of deaths.

Just look to the recent storms and earthquakes that had wrecked worldwide with much deaths from both sides of the sea, yet USA had been spared often, enough to be hailed as a miracle.

An example was the recent storm over Japan. Looming threateningly towards mainland Japan after much destruction in Taiwan, Korea and Okinawa, we prayed for divine help. It came, for that hurricane died down despite many 'expert' opinions that it will not die down but cause much damage to property and lives. It became only a drizzle, with one life lost, instead of thousands as predicted by experts.

My post is not meant to in any way imply religious superiority. Far from it. True religions cares not about mortal superiority, but only lives be saved, regardless if thanked or not thanked for it.

Right now, facing the american seaboard, is storm of immense magnitude, figured out by sciene enough to be of terrifying cyclone status.

Nature is like a software programme that have to be run, and to stop software programmes, would mean stopping the entire computer system, putting many other related errands to an end which will affect far more situations than just one situation.

Once again, I appeal to all religious faithfuls, to pray to our common Creator, to save lives, if not properties. Properties destroyed or lost is no doubt painful, espacially for those whom have little, but properties can always be rebuilt again, as it always had been in the course of our human civilisation.

But once lives are lost, it is forever, and each human life means something precious to another. Cyclones spare none in their vicinities, no matter how prepared one is...

Stay safe all.

Thank you for the precautionary words. My family are perfectly in the center of the projected path.
Not to fearmonger, but My middle aged instincts are also telling me this may be the storm that does materialize in our area.

may want to add to your helpful list:

a couple of tarps
battery packs
car chargers for phones etc.
maybe even a bottle of liquid courage -highest % (:

Be safe everyone! and please have a plan including relocation shelter

Flashing back on last years storm...we had a huge tree fall between my house and garage. The end result was the crushing of a old carport and scratched paint on my jeep..Evo8 came out unharmed.

If these big trees around our house start falling we hit the road to my families house. We are down to 3 large trees within 20 ft of my house. Each year either mother nature of myself take another down.

Hmmm.....let's see.....

Yes, a lot of snowstorm & hurricane predictions don't pan out.
But some do. And some break records.
Just because it never happened before, could simply mean we're overdue!
People mocked Noah because they had never seen a flood before!!!
Just sayin', not comparin'!

Nobody really thought we would get the 3 feet of snow predicted in 1993, but we did!
The storm that caused power outages & record flooding for places
in the east in 2011 was historic for some places.
And hurricane Katrina? It wasn't the wind that caused the most destruction, remember???

If you prepare & nothing happens, no harm done.
BUT, if you don't & it's really as bad as they say it might be....
Don't go knocking on your neighbor's door crying, when you hear their generator,
see their lights, & smell their steaks barbecuing!!!

Just a tip...after the storm, if the power is out for awhile, & the fridge isn't cold anymore...
If you live where it's cold enough...put your perishables in a tupperware type container,
& lock them in your car trunk. Metal holds the cold longer than other materials.
Ever notice how you have to scrape your windshield in the morning,
long before there is ice on anything else?

Make sure it's in something waterproof though,
if it leaks your trunk will reek later!
Just don't sit it outside unprotected, or you may feed every wild animal around!!!

The tip about solar lights is great, but I'm wondering about enough daylight
to recharge them, if we have seven days of rain in a row like they are forecasting for us!
We were wondering if they could recharge themselves off of other types of lights???

And the part I thought of last night? Our internet goes out even without bad storms!
How can we go ATSless that long???
And then I thought.....OMGosh......the storm may hit the most populated areas of the US.
Millions could be without power, water, food, meds. heat....no communication.....

What better time for TPTB to pull something???!!!
This is a conspiracy site after all!!!

Stay safe everyone!!!

There are always nay-sayers who come on every weather thread and say it's all hype, nothing bad will happen, just more fear-mongering.

It is when people get complacent that a disaster can have devastating results, because people aren't prepared. There are storms, and then there are storms that people talk about for years afterward.

The temperature in the Atlantic Ocean has been quite warm, enough to feed this monster storm and keep it at hurricane strength until it hits. The size of it and the slow movement mean a whole lot of moisture and flooding.

It is always better to be prepared and have a storm fizzle out, than to not have any preparations in place, and suddenly your house is under 10 feet of water, or your house has no power for a long time.

The OP said in the title "I hope you're prepared". That's what it's all about. Prepare for flooding, downed trees, and lack of power, which could last for a few weeks. Definitely worth taking seriously!!

Lets say this storm becomes as bad as some say it will. Biblical, apocalyptic, nasty.

Lets say it hits where most of the population of the USA lives.

Lets say it knocks everything out. Power, gas/food supplies, the ability to stay warm.

Under these very bad conditions, where the use of troops, nat gaurds ect is needed,

CAN THE PRESIDENT SUSPEND ELECTIONS?

And then what? do the elections become rescheduled for a better day? I dont understand exactly what could happen if martial law needs to be enacted.

Could this be the catalyst for martial law?

Something fishy about this one folks.

October surprise?

WELL!!!!!!! surprise.

This will be interesting.

Every time there's a story about a storm people here start predicting the worst, then nothing happen and it's all forgotten until the next storm, rinse and repeat.

I'm sure you'll all be fine. There probably won't be massive blackouts, flooding or riots... just as there haven't really been any major incidents like that as a result of any other recent storm either!

That's not true.

Last Halloween, one year ago now, we had a noreaster here knocked down trees all over, and knocked out power for days for many, many people in our area. Businesses, schools, stores, restaurants, etc. were all closed due to power outages. Generators, batteries, and any kind of emergency supplies were hard to get.

The worse was predicted, and it DID happen. And it was not forgotten. It was a lesson learned.

Massive blackouts DO happen. And they are disruptive to life as we know it.

That was just a noreaster. This time we have a noreaster AND a hurricane coming this way. We are right in the path of the eye of the hurricane, and right in the path of the noreaster.
To ignore that and not prepare would be irresponsible.

Thirty-five miles inland from Boston here. Live in a solid brick mansion, and I'm still scared to death of this storm. I think this one is going to be really bad.

Have anything learnt from Katrina? I mean any evacuation plans etc. If this hits the NY, traffic will be total chaos.
I really hope you have better plans than before and following the plans in time not when its too late.

Hope this will tame down .. surely doesn´t look like it

Coastal flooding will be awful for this one. Just rain on top of rain. I hope to dear God that my friends on water dont lose everything.

Best of luck everyone.

OMG you people get on my nerves. Not affected? Don't get on the thread.

There was massive blackouts with the derecho, FEMA had a record breaking year with a dozen storms with over a billion dollars in damage each.

yes, the weather has been crappy. Accept it.

I don't disagree, weather can be crappy. What I mean is that everyone seems to think it's the end of the world and they will be affected by this. There are storms all over the world every week, millions of people experience them on a regular basis, the VAST MAJORITY of people are inconvenienced AT MOST.

Yet, here on ATS, every minor event with regard to weather or volcanic activity or earth quakes becomes a massive drama and potentially a "life changing event".

People need to get some perspective. Yes, it might be a bad storm. Yes, some power lines might come down and a few people might tragically loose their lives. But this hysteria of blowing everything out of all proportion doesn't serve any purpose other than giving people with nothing happening in their lives something exciting to dramatize about.

Every single storm is one of a kind. There is always someone to say it's the "most powerful in ten years" or "potentially more damaging than *insert other event here*"

Be prepared, know about it, use common sense. Everything else is pointless speculation and hyping up of something that shouldn't need hyping up.

And I will make my opinions wherever I like thanks, I don't need your permission to give my opinion on ATS.

You're used to this kind of storm. People in New England aren't.

We could say the same to you if you got 2 measly inches of snow. Icy roads are nothing to us, but a lot of people would get killed down there because you aren't used to driving in winter conditions.

What's with the people speaking insanity about storms never cause damage?

Haha. It's almost as if these people believe no one is affected if they personally don't see it. Ridiculous.
You naysayers should consider yourselves lucky that you have never had your home in 3' of water.

It may not be important to you but is to others. Better to be safe than sorry.

Please feel free to go to a thread that is important to you. No need to be on one that isnt.

Peace.

Yes, but most are not late season hurricanes, fueld by a jet stream and bumping up against a winter storm.

Not all storms are created equal.

Yet, here on ATS, every minor event with regard to weather or volcanic activity or earth quakes becomes a massive drama and potentially a "life changing event".

Yes, this site is full of people who love doom porn. I won't argue with you there. LOL. "omg there was a 5.5 earthquake in California!"

People need to get some perspective. Yes, it might be a bad storm. Yes, some power lines might come down and a few people might tragically loose their lives.

No one should have to lose their lives with careful preparation. Which is why NOT downplaying it is so important. If anyone loses their life, it is not a routine storm, and it is a bad one.

But this hysteria of blowing everything out of all proportion doesn't serve any purpose other than giving people with nothing happening in their lives something exciting to dramatize about.

This is affecting the eastern seaboard, where the majority of Americans live. You are talking about disrupting the very infrastructure.
people don't have to die for it to be traumatic.
If someone who works a menaial job might lose wages. Thank heavens I will get paid, but I don't even make it paycheck to paycheck. Losing a day of work would be a major hardship.
Some people can't afford to "stock up" and prepare. What if people can't make it to food pantries?
Couples going on a honeymoon are having a life event disrupted.
Maybe some guy who has worked and saved for thirty years for his first, nice vacation maybe having it disrupted.
I am very nervous because my son has a really bad cough. What if it gets worse and I can't get help?

You have seemed to minimalize the human element.

Every single storm is one of a kind. There is always someone to say it's the "most powerful in ten years" or "potentially more damaging than *insert other event here*"

Yes, the media does tend to hype things up a bit. But events that are even hyped up are still ignored. In my book, there can't be enough warning.

The strongest storm to hit NO wasn't Katrina, it was Camille. A lot of people stayed in NO, not because they couldn't leave, but they survived Camille, and thought this wouldn't be a big deal. What they didn't know is that 40 years of wetland development erased natural ability to protect against flood surge.

Because of that, Camille killed more people during Katrina, then died in Camille.

Be prepared, know about it, use common sense. Everything else is pointless speculation and hyping up of something that shouldn't need hyping up.

And how does this hyping up, personally hurt you? This isn't about you, this is to make people prepare who have the same attitude as you. It is a dangerous attitude.

There is a story about a family in NO whose elderly father weathered many hurricanes, thought they were not a big deal, and he refused to leave his home. His children tried and tried to get him to leave. They couldn't get back to his house for several weeks, to find scratch marks in the ceiling of the attic where he tried to get out.

And I will make my opinions wherever I like thanks, I don't need your permission to give my opinion on ATS.

edit on 27-10-2012 by detachedindividual because: (no reason given)

And I am free to tell you it is unreasonable and unneccessary. If it wasn't such a big deal to you, then why do you continually return to a survival prep thread, for a topic you don't care about, to repeat that it isn't a big deal, when apparently it is.

Because telling people to not prepare for something is completely irresponsible, so I can only gather that you only mean malintent, and that is VERY concerning.
