Mayans demand an end to doomsday myth

www.abs-cbnnews.com

Guatemala's Mayan people accused the government and tour groups on Wednesday of perpetuating the myth that their calendar foresees the imminent end of the world for monetary gain.

"We are speaking out against deceit, lies and twisting of the truth, and turning us into folklore-for-profit. They are not telling the truth about time cycles," charged Felipe Gomez, leader of the Maya alliance Oxlaljuj Ajpop.
..
Experts say that for the Maya, all that ends in 2012 is one of their calendar cycles

I know that there are lots of 2012 threads on ATS (and there is a forum dedicated to them at www.abovetopsecret.com...), but I thought it worth highlighting the new press reports about a statement issued by Felipe Gomez, leader of the Maya alliance Oxlaljuj Ajpop, saying that the new Maya time cycle simply "means there will be big changes on the personal, family and community level, so that there is harmony and balance between mankind and nature."

It seems that some Mayans are rather angry about their heritage being hijacked and distorted.

Of course, I doubt this will have much impact on the circulation of relevant 2012 stories.

They'll get their way on December 22.
All they have to do is wait a couple more months.

Good for them. I'm glad they are trying to put the kabosh on all this nonsense.

I think it is too little too late though.
They should have issued this statement about 2 years ago. I guess we'll see if of has any effect. But as you said, the mutters are not going to be interested in anyone trying to crap in their Wheaties of Doom, even if it is the Mahanadi themselves.

I could see how this could be misconstrued to mean what people fear it to mean...civilization and society are so far away from nature; and stuck into their own made up world, of creations wrought from their minds...that a catastrophe is the only way humanity could ever; be back in a balance with nature...

Oh, come on now, can't we have a little fun with this 2012 crap without the Mayans getting upset? I like all the excitement of waiting for a doomsday to come and go. We need to prep for the next doomsday event after 12/21 or everything may get boring.

"Maya time cycle simply "means there will be big changes on the personal, family and community level, so that there is harmony and balance between mankind and nature."

well that could be catastrophic for those who care little of family and community (TPTB, governments)eh.

i think the way many are cashing in on the Maya is where the anger comes from for my relatives down there. they know full and well that current society structure is out of balance and quite destructive currently and actually this shouldn't anger them since they knew it was coming and see it around them everyday.

kind of makes me wonder why certain Maya are speaking of being angry about this. i'm unsure i believe this is coming from genuine Maya elders, perhaps an off shoot of said leadership.

the elders i have read of remain hopeful for our future but are concerned with genetic manipulation and radiation poisoning from various sources, think Fukushima etc. these are the real elders only concern at this time and could care less about money or how any one exploits their beliefs since they know it will be coming to an end on that level very soon.

Excellent... and long overdue this statement is!

Hopefully the mere presence of the Mayans themselves in this debate will turn around a lot of people and make push them towards wanting more balance in their life and in the world.
We are headed down the wrong road, but it's not further than we can indeed reroute ourselves and find a more meaningful existence.

I personally think we are going to see something unpredictable happen in the next year. As we go farther on the other side of the galactic plain, something will happen. I don't think it is a doom and gloom event though, just an interesting change in the world. Adapting to it will be hard for some and a few scientific theories may need to be discarded or adapted completely to include the new knowledge. I could be wrong, I could be right...We'll just have to see what happens.

I do find it quite funny that the Mayans have waited until 2012 before really attempting to debunk these myths! Never bought into it myself but i do have to laugh at this.

They could have seriously started debunking all this 20 plus years ago. Instead, they have allowed it to be milked to death and then when 2012 comes round, they embark on global missions to say it is all rubbish anyway and, by the way, we are rather offended!

Nicely played Mayans.

the ancestors of the people who apparently prophesied this apocalypse don't even believe it, yet there's so many crazy people creating theories.
ugh i feel bad for the maya.

Don't feel bad. They have coined it for decades because of these rumours, as have many others. That is why i have no sympathy that they are claiming to be offended nowadays. You aren't suddenly offended after milking it for decades are you?

i'm quite certain traditional, well as traditional as a decimated people can be, elders never have nor are today cashing in on anything, they haven't milked anything and for you to insinuate otherwise is quite small of you.

show me all those rich Maya wont you?

Do they not make money of all the tourists pouring in then?

Come on, think a little will you before jumping all over the "poor repressed natives" bandwagon. No, they haven't made millions out of it, like some unscrupulous book dealers, authors etc. But they haven't been actively saying this is incorrect in any way until this year. They have been quite happy to take the tourist money.

So yes, they can say it is wrong and innacurate. But no, they cannot realistically claim offence when they have generally waited until 2012 before embarking on any large scale debunking attempts. It is complete and utter hypocrisy for them to claim otherwise.

While i dont put any stock into 2012 and do not believe in prophecy, as it would preclude free will, this statement in itself could mean disaster.

Imagine a sun flare EMPing everything. The majority of the world population would die off within 1 year, leaving us with perhaps...............500 million? Only those who would be able to hunt, fish and farm old fashioned like would have a chance.

But it would force man and nature to live in harmony. Or, more correctly, much more harmoniously than we currently do.

While we're at it, can we demand an end to the god-awful New Age quackery that loves to promote this garbage? How about the 'Crystal Skulls' and the Ancient Aliens mesoamerican crap also.

no they don't make money off of tourists, that would be the job of the governments who have declared them national monuments. ask any Lakota how much money they make from the bad lands or mount rushmore....

i think you're confused on how exactly aboriginal people are treated in this day and age. btw they don't own casinos down there so please spare me on that line.

the people who truly have as close of a tie to the traditional teachings as can be expected, aren't making any money nor any claim to fame from these traditional teachings. you must realize there are still leaders, spiritual leaders, who are not driven by money, greed or corruption.

that's why i stated my concern for this claim that "they" are angry when the real "they" could care less about money or any white mans fantasy games.

you have probably never spent any time with true spiritual leaders of the native peoples and i'm sad for that, because then you would see just how human beings should conduct themselves and you would also see great potential for mankind in general.

I'd really love to know who these 'experts' are. They sure say a lot for a group of people so hard to pin down.

And who are these current Mayans anyway, they're not the really smart guys that said "Alright already, here's your stupid 5 thousand year calendar. I still can't see what's wrong with one that only goes 12 months, personally..".. these guys are just lazing around and not doing very much star gazing and prophesying or anything at all... not even a rain dance. Probably all too busy on their iphones.

Imposters I say.

Actually they have denied it for decades. If you go down to Mexico or Guatemala and ask the natives about 2012 they have no idea what you're talking about. I have a feeling the reason we're not getting an official denial until now is because the Maya simply didn't know how big this thing had gotten. Now however you have the governments of these two countries working overtime to get tourists by milking the fact that it's 2012. I mean the governments of these countries are outright lying about archaeological discoveries and supporting charlatans like Raul Julia Levy. And that's not even counting the numerous tour packages these countries are offering promising things like peace and enlightenment.
