An alternative map from the same source (ECT) reveals that the 'hotspots' actually indicate amingst other things, places where conferences on the subject have been held, or organisations based in those countries have expressed interest in the subject, both in favour and against (for example, The Royal Society, based in London, calling for more research on the subject). It also shows, for example, places where tests into sequation of CO2 underground are being undertaken. Somewhat misleading then!!!

Yes, their data chopping techniques are painfully obvious. The group appear to be well intentioned neo-Luddites. They provide a definition of geo-engineering which includes:

In other words, if you clear away brush and plant seeds, you are deliberately engineering the eco-system. These people consider agriculture to be geo-engineering. That's why the breadbasket countries are colored in and the food importing ones are not.
