I WAS WRONG. I'M SORRY.

I should have said that a summary of his tax returns were released, not the returns themselves. You probably recall the PriceWaterhouseCoopers letter: www.mittromney.com... Of course, the last dozen years of his returns would run close to 3,000 pages. Romney's opponents would say "See, here on line 45, page 207, 2003, "proof" that he did something slimy." Romney's supporters would say, "That's not what it means at all." Then we could discuss tax law for the rest of our lives.

And here is one place where it seems to be discussed in a manner which is half friendly and half critical of Romney. www.thedailybeast.com... It seems balanced, readable, informative, and not too long.

Again, my apologies for misleading you and the readers of this thread.

Now, can we get back to trying to find a reason for Obama to reject Trump's offer, or is ATS just going to forget it?

Decent question. My mindset would be similar, but not exactly the same. Yes, I would have preferred Romney to release his returns, but there are, at least, a couple of small differences.

1.) The tax returns would be thousands of pages prepared by an accounting firm. They deal with tax law, an area so arcane that, truly, nobody understands it all. The down side for Romney? Maybe a "gotcha," certainly defending against innuendos and misrepresentations that no voter could ever understand.

With Obama, if his college application had the box "Foreign student?" checked, it wouldn't require detailed analysis for the taxpayer to understand. The downside? Possible ineligibility, or, maybe shown as lying to the college.

2.) I'm am absolutely certain that Romney's returns have been audited by the IRS. They probably started that during the primaries. If there had been anything illegal in his returns, it would have been found and made public somehow. Certainly there'd be a record of a fine or trial or something, that would have been exposed by now.

All of Obama's records are basically in friendly hands, if there was anything wrong, it might not have been brought out.

As far as $1 million v. $5 million? I don't think that would make a difference, at least not to Romney. He already donates that much, but I wonder if there would come a time when he would say "It's worth it to lose my privacy." I don't know what he's got in those returns, but try him with $1000 million and see what happens.

With Romney's returns there are all sorts of questions, possibilities, explanations, nuances, definitions and differences of opinion. With Obama, it's basically "Yes, I told the truth on this form," or "No, I lied."

I would like to know Romney's reasons for keeping his returns, and I would like to know Obama's reasons as well.

From the way the press (and ATS) is handling it, Trump's offer will be ignored and laughed at. Too bad, of course, but that's politics.

Of course, you don't have to satisfy my curiosity, but why would Obama be opposed to this deal? Because it's coming from Trump? Then, could Obama safely take the deal from an anonymous donor?

I'm trying to figure this out. One possible explanation is that if he takes the deal, he'll lose more than the deal is worth. But what would he possibly be losing; freedom, job security, money? And is there any other possible explanation?

I see what you are saying. I just do not know if it would be a good political move to give credence to anything that comes from Trump. He is kind of a clown. I would like to see both Obamas transcripts and Romney’s Tax returns. Obama release his transcripts? LOL. Just take a look at all the people he associated with in those days who were socialists. He's going down in history as america's first socialist president, and both Bill and Hillary Clinton supported him and now Bill Clinton is trying to throw Obama under the bus over Benghazi to try and pull Hillary's ass out of the fire, but if you ask me the woman commited political suicide hitching her wagon to Obama's mules, one more Jezebel spirit down.

I don't think his returns would tie him to it. The Iran contra scandal broke in 1986, more than a quarter century ago. Nobody has ever suggested that he release returns that old. Oh, and about his company? He co-founded it in 1984 with about $50 million. About $9 million came from several investors in Latin America and $12 million came from the partners themselves. I haven't found anything about a link to Iran Contra, but my weakness as a researcher doesn't prove Romney was clean or dirty.

I just do not know if it would be a good political move to give credence to anything that comes from Trump. He is kind of a clown.

Not a bad point. Too bad that Trump is such an attention grabber. Had it been anonymous, it would have been a little tougher to turn down.

You are probably right it was something I heard about and I brought up to some expats and locals while I was there. You always hear some good stories and innuendos being thrown around in crowds like that. More bar room talk than anything but it still has me curious as one could be.

It doesn't influence my vote one way or another because I cast mine before leaving the country. It is something I really wonder about none the less

Well, where to start.

1) The birth certificate is real. The layers thing has been beat like a dead horse. If you'd like to take the time to send me your birth certificate, I'll take a few minutes and send you a PDF of yours with the same kind of layers. It's sad that people simply cant aceept that they dont know what they are talking about.

2) So what if Bush was a member of Skull and Bones. If you dont like it, thats cool - you dont have to. But he has done nothing wrong with being a member. Kind of like Romney being LDS - I dont agree with that, but he has every right, and there is nothing "wrong" with it.

Mombasa was part of Zanzibar until December of 1963. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.
