Ranking the Benghazi Scandal

The tragedy in Benghazi is still unfolding and, besides the human tragedy, will in my opinion
become one of the greatest US political and foreign policy scandals of all time.

Why?

- The event is historic. Not in 33 years has a US ambassador been killed in the line of
duty - there have been 5 total all between 1968 and 1979.

- The Obama administrations bungled attempt to spin and control communications lead the nation,
the United Nations and the world to beleive the attack was a reaction to hate speech by the US
in the form of an anti-Islamic video. The official position presented by the WHite House
contradicts the facts, common sense and sworn testimony of it's own State Dept. and proves the
Adminsitration to be either incompetant or liars.

The question now becomes how big will Benghazi get and where does it rank among the top
US political scandals historically?

Here is my top six rankings showing the administration, the event, why it's significant and
the result.....

1. Watergate - Nixon, Issue of Trust, President forced to resign

2. Bengazi - Obama, 2 different scandals resulting in death of Ambassador and 3 others
a. Numerous ignored requests to provide adequate security
b. Coverup and misinformation
Results yet unknown but resignations and potential prosecutions will almost certainly
ensue and likely will cost Obama re-election and potential prevent Hillary Clinton from election in 2016

3. Monica Lewinski - Clinton, Issue of Trust & Morality, President Impeached

4. Bay of Pigs Invasion - Kennedy, Failed coup / regime change, President ????

5. Iran Contras - Reagan, Covert support of unsavory elements in regime change,
11 convictions of government officials on minor charges

6. Chappaquiddic - Ted Kennedy, death of Mary Jo Kapechne, likely cost another Kennedy
any chance at the White House

If...it doesn't get buried under Executive Privilege like Fast and Furious, we may find out the truth.

You are right though. It's right up there at the top of bungled, inept fiascoes.

Slightly off-topic, but most MA residents (I was born and lived there over 30 years) who are aware of the "scandal" don't care. Even those who believe the Kennedy's were responsible for actual "murder" feel they should serve no jail time and it's a non-issue because they help the people so much and they can really stick it to Republicans.

OT: I don't know if I would place Benghazi that high. It's definitely top 10. It has been well covered up though, and unless the media decides to make it an issue it will be a non-factor.

I agree. No time in modern history has a political party immediately exploited a national tragedy in the manner the GOP did. Post 9-11, I don't remember Democrats issuing press releases while the planes were still in the air calling President Bush a failure and blaming the GOP.

Nor do I remember the Democrats immediately politicizing the tragedy in the days that followed even before the intelligence community and justice department could gather facts about what happened and who was behind it.

Libyan Ambassador’s Death Not a Political Issue, Says Dad

The father of Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya who was killed in the attack in Benghazi last month, said his son’s death shouldn’t be politicized in the presidential campaign.

“It would really be abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue,” Jan Stevens, 77, said in a telephone interview from his home in Loomis, California, as he prepares for a memorial service for his son next week.

The Romney campaign and the GOP see political opportunity...

I am actually glad that President Bush was in office during the 9-11 attacks. I don't think I could have stomached the GOPs response if it had been a Democrat President.

The GOP is failing...Politically and Morally.
