Police: Burned La. Woman Sharmeka Moffitt Made Up Racist Attack Story.

www.cbsnews.com
WINNSBORO, La. - State police say a 20-year woman suffering from extensive burns apparently made up a story about being set on fire by three men wearing white hoodies who wrote the initials KKK and a racial slur on her car. Instead, authorities said Tuesday she burned herself and then fabricated the story about being attacked.

On Sunday at 8 p.m. Sharmeka Moffitt called 911 from a walking trail in Winnsboro and told authorities she had been doused in flammable liquid by three men wearing hoodies. She suffered extensive burns on more than half her body and was taken to LSU Health Sciences Ce

I will believe it when she herself says she made it up and apologizes. I am sorry, but I do not believe any Police officer or Police Department in the Deep South regarding anything having to do with racism. Anyone with a sense of US History, knows full well that no Deep South cop has an ounce of integrity when it comes to crimes of a racial nature.

Slam away, but I won't be back to this thread to read what was said anyway.

Generalize, much?

Did you get your 100% figure from personal interviews of deep south cops or from Hollywood?

Oh that's right, you "won't be back to answer." Nevermind. I think I know the answer anyway.

From reality.

History?? aka, "NEVER FORGET!"

I used to think like you till I realized this little game is a one-way street. In the real world the opposite of this story happens in real life and the media won't touch it. But as long as we don't forget history, it's cool.

I've lived in the South for years and it's just like everywhere else. You have good cops and bad cops. I've met some that would go out of their way to help anyone who needed it, and the ones that would throw you in jail for looking at them. Interestingly enough, one of the problem cops that someone I knew had issues with was black.

It should be of great concern to anybody in the area she is from, that the mental health services there have managed to miss this womans clearly self destructive tendancies. From the available information, it would appear as if there is no mention of her being under the care of a regional mental health organisation. If her condition is such that she was prepared to SET HERSELF ON FIRE then it seems to me that some element of her behavior should have alerted SOMEONE to the fact that she was a danger to herself.

Is there something wrong with the community from which she comes, that a person can spiral into such levels of insanity without being identified, assessed, and assisted with thier issues to some degree? On another matter now, was the self immolation an attempt at suicide, and if so what was the reason for the scrawling on her vehicle, of the KKK reference? Was she attempting to hide her suicide behind a veil of obsfucation? If so, was that to protect her family, her friends from the reality of her suicide, or was it to protect herself from being seen as a suicide case? Was it concern for her own honour, or for her near and dear ones, that lead her to attempt to hide the truth of her "last" act on earth?

No matter the outcome of the inevitable investigations, inquests, and interpersonal interogation which will likely commence, it is a terrible thing that has been allowed to happen.

This is so messed up. She was obviously under some sort of mental distress to do something like this to herself, but at the same time it's lies like this that do nothing but fuel unneeded racial tension in communities especially in a place like Louisiana.

I hope she recovers soon, and was wondering if anyone thinks she could be charged with any crimes?

No, I don't think she should be charged with anything. I'll be attacked for saying that, but it's obvious this woman is mentally ill. You don't set yourself on fire for attention if you are sane. I think there has been enough suffering here. Charging her is kind of pointless considering those factors as it's likely to be thrown out with an insanity defense.

Sorry to hear you've been on the receiving end of racism but as you know that is a two-way street. If this woman did indeed burn herself she is a very sick individual. If not, then she must be suffering an unimaginable fate being so horribly scarred then disbelieved about how it actually happened.

As for the civil-rights museum in Memphis it was the garbage men there that went on strike that brought Martin Luther King Jr. to town in support of them where he was later assassinated. Memphis played a critical role in the evolution of race relations in the United States. Hundreds of garbage workers and their supporters were brutally beaten by the police and suffered to bring social justice. Sure, Native Americans and Jews have been the victims of racism there in Memphis but it was blacks that have done the vast majority of the suffering there.

Can you imagine having to wear a sign that reads: "I am a Man" just to get decent pay and be given any respect at all for the work that you do? That's what started in all back in the 60's.

Exactly and Precisely what I was thinking myself. I highly doubt she did this to herself.

...you don't set yourself on fire if you are sane

Oh? You want to tell that to all these Nuns, Priests, and Monks protesting against Chinese brutality?

Many other, quite sane (but fed-up) protesters have done the same throughout history - even today. Not a method I would choose (and likely not you either, since you are "sane" -and chicken, like me), but do a simple search on "self-immolation" and then tell me only the insane would do such a thing. Of course, our lovely LA woman may be both insane and protesting at the same time, I suppose.

I feel the same way. I know part of the problem was her own finger prints of the lighter fluid, but they could of very easily made her douse herself. I want to hear her side of the story.

It actually happens. I work in the ER of a large hospital in Alabama. A few months ago the EMT's brought in a woman who doused herself in gasoline and lit herself on fire. She had two kids and devestated husband.

Our patient care rep said the family had no idea what could have made her do it.
