Iran threatens to stop oil exports, considers anti-Europe sanctions

Iran warns that it could stop exporting oil, driving global crude prices up, should the US and allied Europe tighten sanctions further. For such a case, Tehran says, it has a contingency strategy to carry on without oil revenues.

Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Ghasemi said.

“If you continue to add to the sanctions, we will stop our oil exports to the world,”

“The lack of Iranian oil in the market would drastically add to the price.”

On October 15, the European Union foreign ministers approved a new package of sanctions targeting Iran’s financial, trade, energy, transportation and telecommunications sectors. Earlier in October, American lawmakers also extended the already tough sanctions against Iran.

The measures have severely hurt the Islamic Republic’s economy. However, Qasemi said that Iran has a “Plan B” which will enable the country to make due without profits from oil sales. He did not mention how long the economy could function, though, without selling oil.

Iran is still pumping oil at capacity and producing 4 million barrels per day (bpd), Qasemi said, denying OPEC’s report that the country's output has fallen to around 2.7 million bpd.

He added that "Iran has been facing US sanctions for 30 years while successfully managing its oil sector."

Apparently about 70 European oil-refining plants depend on Iranian oil, and the state of the EU right now this will cause big problems on a already razors edge european economy, so what does the EU do about this threat of counter sanctions, submit to it's crack/oil dealer, or attack with force to get it's fix.

Are iran playing the game well so far, managing to hold off the foaming dogs of war, or are they pushing there luck.

good

should jump start investments in solar, geothermal, natural gas, propane and wind power, maybe even wave power

didn't think he was that stupid

The solar power that can be created in the ME trumps the energy we would get from oil there. The middle east and africa are perfect places to build large solar power plants and water desalination plants. I hope some sort of agreement can be made before these cock fighting contests cost everyone world wide the roof over their head.

Good idea on their part imo, refuse to trade with Europe, therefore driving up the price of oil and then sell to Russia and China for a slightly discounted but still above current rates price.

They should have done this when the unwarranted sanctions started. This is a good move on their part.

Iran does not have much choice do they?, as the above poster mentioned I was thinking the same thing especially selling to China.

I do not believe this is an antagonistic move, I believe they are letting the West know exactly what they can expect next/now.

Fair warning indeed, I wonder how many heart attacks are happening right now in Europe and the other centers of power around the world.......Cough cough Bankers I meant.

S&F for bringing this to our attention here

The refusal to allow IAEA inspectors into nuclear facilities for decades, under allegations of a weaponized nuclear development program, possibly at the risk of war, is unwarranted?

Just saying.

I will agree that i was surprised that they have not played the Oil card more aggressively. Its concerning that a single nation can threaten the economic stability of the entire planet.

The inspectors have been in their facilities. And every intelligence agency has said they are not building nukes. Without hard evidence to back it up then the sanctions are unwarranted. Besides they have always said if we are attacked we will fight back. They are not looking to start the fight other nations are wanting to start it.

You know Van Rompuy of the european council is in a right panic over this news and Barroso will be drawing up war plans with merkel and sarkozy in NATO HQ as we type, this is the last thing the european union needs right now.

Lets not forget the Weapons of Mass destruction in Iraq which did not exist and and yet caused a whole world of misery for the Iraqi people and their government as well...

It seems to me that the past dozen or so major conflicts are started with the idea of "any port in a storm" kind of mentality when there is no storm to speak of....

To compare the mighty UN inspectors to a personal situation is easy, We do not use any illegal substances here at all and never have.

Paid our taxes and loved our neighbours, however if someone/ anyone demanded to examine our home and property just because they had suspicions I would be very very negative towards them and their backers.

Yep and winter is here too, learn to fear the mailman with the heating bills.

Could be downright ugly.

Please, do not misunderstand. I tend to side with your opinions on the middle east, but in my opinion the Iranian regime has done everything to block progress in dismissing the allegations, even at the cost of war.

There have been documented instances of denial of entry to inspectors that i know you are aware of, as i have seen you debate in those particular threads.

Under the current circumstances and with all the unverifiable information out there, why not be completely transparent to not only to the west, but to the global community to final put this issue to rest. This has not been the case and Iran continues to resist any opportunity for clemency.

But i digress, the topic at hand is a similar tactic that Iran has been using effectively for a long time. I just hope Iran remains the victor in this game of chicken, because i fear the west will not swerve one of these days on the issue of Irans nuclear program, if it exists ofcourse :lol

You are kidding right ?
You want 4 more wars, this is not a Xbox game, you want people to be awake as you say, educate them, don't eliminate them.
War a terrible thing.

I don't find it concerning at all. It is their land. EU and the US have made choices to be dependent on oil from these countries and I for one would love to see them shut it off. Imagine if the US would have invested the trillions of dollars we spent in the middle east on alternative energies and infrastructure to support it. We'd be off the OPEC crack, energy independent and be out of the middle east.

This would once again incite the oil companies to take over the US military and run it for profit. Darth Vader Cheney said he wanted oil at fifty cents a barrel at any cost to taxpayers. It is all about greed.

Solution is simple (barbaric, but simple). Stop feeding them. Then stop feeding anyone that does feed them. The oil will flow like water.

That's pretty much happening their people are hungry and their currency is down what 70%?

This is a last ditch effort to ease the tough sanction. Do you really think Iran's economy could take halting oil exports? It would create some economic problems in the world but I think they and their people would be hit hardest. Oh wait if they really cared about their starving people they would have scrapped the nuclear program by now anyway.

The sanctions are not meant to change the policy of the leadership. They are a way to force the people to get new leadership. At least thats how I see it.

I have spent a lot of time in the ME, it will take a lot more than sanctions to make the people rise up. It's just not in their blood to question those in power. That is one thing most people in the west cannot get though their thick skulls. Society (the population) of the ME does not conform to western norms. Most westerners have one of two mind-sets: "What can I do for me" or "what can I do for others". From my experiences in the ME a majority of the peoples mind-set is "what can I do for the guy above me".

All my opinion of course, and there will forever be exceptions to the rule.
