AN American man has been convicted of murdering his best friend's pregnant 14-year-old girlfriend by stabbing her, beating her with a rock and burying her alive.

Lord Hampton, 25, faces an automatic life sentence without parole on two counts of murder in the 1999 slaying of Chauntae Jones and her unborn child.

A Boston jury reached the verdict six months after the girl's boyfriend, Kyle Bryant, was acquitted of the same counts. Each man had blamed the other for the teenager's death.

Prosecutor David Meier described Hampton and Mr Bryant as "two men together with a purpose and a plan" to kill the girl, who was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
