You are on the correct line of reasoning. I'll take it the next step and ask, if the horses were shown that residence on the ranch were simply a matter of consent (choice), but to live outside the ranch meant that they could not drink from the trough and could not eat the hay, would those horses (who universally and incessantly whinny about freedom) allow themselves to see that they have chosen and continue to choose a slave's existence? Or, would they demonize the horses that have decided to leave and who have the impudence and gall to whisper the truth through the fence-rails?
