Debris from nearly a quarter of a century of war in Afghanistan lies strewn across the country. Some, like this armoured vehicle, has graffiti by soldiers. (Pictures: Soutik Biswas)





Even the remains of the war with the Soviet Union have not been cleared - like this helicopter.






A writer once commented that much of Afghanistan is "like a scene from Mad Max or some futurist post-holocaust movie". This army truck has been rusting in the desert for years.






A graveyard of Russian tanks on the outskirts of Kabul. Much of the surplus equipment was sold as scrap to dealers in neighbouring Pakistan.
