I bet he can't explain why Ron Paul equals "goodbye to the DOD." Because it is a falsehood. Instead of taking it upon yourself, throw it back on them. Ask them to regurgitate some half-truths and rumors until they look stupid in their own lack of knowledge. You don't need 3 sentences, just 2 words.

Of course, you could always compare our "Defensive Force" to Japan's "Defensive Force." Our weaponry is entirely geared toward OFFENSE, and it is deployed around the world in that duty. After WWII, Japan was restricted to entirely defensive weapons, so compare the two forces. Ron Paul might get rid of our Department of Offense, but the Department of Defense will be just fine. In fact, Paul wants to increase diplomacy and trade, even into countries like Iran, so more diplomacy, means more Embassies, and more positions for DOD employees! You could also mention the fact that the military overwhelmingly supports Paul, so apparently they are not too worried about the false rumors.
