'Fresh from the OORT Cloud' - Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON)

Scientific American - Once in a Civilization Comet

Astronomers predict that the comet will pass just 1.16 million miles from the Sun as it swings around its perihelion, or closest approach. (This may seem like a lot, but remember—the Sun is big. If we were to scale the Sun down to the size of Earth, the comet would pass well within the orbits of dozens of satellites.) The close approach will melt enormous amounts of the comet’s ice, releasing dust and gas and forming what should be a magnificent tail.

After it loops around the Sun and forms this tail, the comet should then pass relatively close to Earth—not near enough to cause any worry, but close enough to put on a great show. Viewers in the Northern Hemisphere will get the best view as the comet blooms in the weeks approaching Christmas 2013. The comet could grow as bright as the full moon.

Astronomy Now

A new comet has been discovered that is predicted to blaze incredibly brilliantly in the skies during late 2013. With a perihelion passage of less than two million kilometres from the Sun on 28 November 2013, current predictions are of an object that will dazzle the eye at up to magnitude —16. That's far brighter than the full Moon. If predictions hold true then C/2012 S1 will certainly be one of the greatest comets in human history, far outshining the memorable Comet Hale-Bopp of 1997 and very likely to outdo the long-awaited Comet Pan-STARRS (C/2011 L4) which is set to stun in March 2013.

I render this thread completely obsolete....

We all know Nibiru will smash us all to pieces at the end of 2012.

Already seeing posts that this is Nibiri, the second sun. And teh comet story is a cover up to hide the fact that it is Nibiru (because it will be so bright).

As silly as it is, with the coordinates and other information that Nibiru people have given, this comet fits the quota
Someone could put all the evidence together and convince a few gullible people that this is the awaited planetoid..

The universe provides us with spectacular eye candy to the naked eye now & then. Here's to hoping that ISON pulls the opposite of Elenin and lives up to that eye candy potential & then some--it's a much needed mental health break from the Doom Porn horse manure that we wallow in on this rock

Regarding the gullible, considering people like Heaven's Gate, I don't doubt it. Granted, it was a cult, it doesn't mean no Nibiru cult won't pop up. I just hope people don't go all stupid over a pretty sweet stroke of luck of existing while it passes.

How To Make A Doom Thread.

One cup of reasoned news
Half a tsp of conspiracy
2 oz hyperbole

Let sit for 10 minutes.

Then run to your bomb shelters with your BOB's and poo yourself.

Google Heaven's Gate and Hale Bopp. Your comet-fu is weak.

You're serious? o.O Ohh, give it a Google. Long story short, crazies + belief of space craft behind comet = OMG.
I clarified my post to not sound so vague, fyi.

all jokes aside
that is pretty incredible timing....
it would be ironic if, after how ridiculous the whole 2012 doomsday phenom has made itself
there was a seed of truth buried deep inside after all.

the universe playing the biggest practical joke ever at our expense
i know i'd die laughing when the boot drops.

Ooh, another chance for a cleansing of the gene pool!

I'm looking forward to seeing the light show, but not looking forward to seeing potentially thousands of cult followers being duped into giving up their life savings before drinking the suspicious green liquid.

You can bet there are a few people planning to use this to get rich off the backs of gullible people.

I wonder if Alex Jones will be making any claims on this one being some kind of NWO ploy to distract the masses. Come on AJ, you've managed to weave everything else into your grand web of insanity, give this one a go and give us a chuckle!

We all know the drill:

1. Laura Knight Jadczyk receives an important communication from her alien/future human contacts.
2. Terral's team of "astronomers" start posting videos linking the comet to earthquakes/floods/droughts/funny clouds.
3. Richard Hoagland draws lines on a blurry image to prove it's a gigantic spaceship.
4. Captain Bluecoat and his Space Rangers tool over in their FTL flivvers and proclaim it a "Class 32b Transwarp Emitting Station."
5. Photos of the comet taken by genuine astronomers are proclaimed "fake" by Nibiru proponents.
6. A well known octogenarian astronomer dies in his sleep, proving he was murdered to cover something up.

Let the games begin.

I look forward to the views. With luck, I'll be in Wisconsin by then and away from all the light pollution.

It's a good thing I'm retired as I foresee many a sleepless night stargazing.
