Yeah -- two of those that I mentioned are not government websites.

The first link in my list above (cimss.ssec.wisc.edu...) is from the University of Wisconsin.

The third link in my list above (www.agu.org...) is from the American Geophysical Union. Despite having the word "American" in its name, it is NOT a government organization. It is a private organization made up of members from all over the world -- from many different countries.


Here is another non-government link -- it is to a paper written in 1972 by Dr. Robert Knollenberg from the University of Chicago. He doesn't specifically explain the science behind the persistence of contrails (that's not the purpose of this paper), but his subject matter (growth of ice budget in a persistent contrail) does touch upon some ideas regarding how contrails persist in the first place.
