Man finds softball-size eyeball on beach

www.wftv.com

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that a man found the blue eyeball Wednesday in Pompano Beach. It wasn't immediately clear what species of animal the eye came from.

I love this and it's just in time for Halloween!

What sea creature would have a blue eye this large?
I find it truly fascinating that the experts aren't even sure what creature this eyeball belonged to, so this will be an interesting situation to follow.
My money's on a giant squid.
What's your guess?

Where does it say "experts" don't know what it is?

But officials placed it on ice, planning to have it analyzed at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg.

It hasn't been examined by "experts" yet.

Just curious...is it possible that a human eye had been soaking in some sort of fluid, that could have enlarged it ?

Then perhaps dumped into the ocean?

Probably not.., but it would be interesting if it were possible.

Sorry, my bad.
I simply supposed that the Fish and Wildlife Commission would have experts in a state surrounded by ocean who may have known what this eyeball used to be attached to.
So, correction -- the Fish and Wildlife Commission has no oceanic experts.

My first response? Poke it with a stick. Wasn't there just a story about a beached whale in Florida?

Pics or it didn't happen!

I wanna see this thing. Surprised the local news station doesn't have a pic already.

Edit: Well, this thread moves fast! The pic appeared in-thread as I was posting!

First impression - Marlin, or some other billfish. Swordfish are nocturnal, large eyes.

At a quick guess I'd say a Giant squid, from what I recall they have the biggest eyes in the animal kingdom.

Giant squid eyes are said to be flatter and about the size of dinner plates.
[If they truly exist as big as speculated]
