A planet , 55 Cancri e , orbiting the star , 55 Cancri , located 40 light years from Earth , is claimed to be a Diamond Planet .

New research led by Yale University scientists suggests that a rocky planet twice Earth's size orbiting a nearby star is a diamond planet.

The surface of this planet is likely covered in graphite and diamond rather than water and granite

The planet -- called 55 Cancri e is one of five planets orbiting a sun-like star, 55 Cancri, that is located 40 light years from Earth yet visible to the naked eye in the constellation of Cancer

The study estimates that at least a third of the planet's mass -- the equivalent of about three Earth masses -- could be diamond.

The paper is titled "A Possible Carbon-rich Interior in Super-Earth 55 Cancri e."

A ship-load of diamonds from that planet should pay for the cost of developing NASA's warp drive - needed to travel the 40 light years journey to there.

no it wouldnt. diamonds are fairly cheap and abundant. the only reason they are so expensive on earth is because of greedy people. harvesting HE-3 off of the moons surface on the other hand would probably fund quite a bit of a warp drive

The other poster is right. Diamonds are very common. The supply is kept artificially low by TPTB so that the price remains high. Something like this, if they were available and easy to get to would easily drop the value. If the supplies of diamonds here on good old planet earth were made available diamonds would be cheaper than CZ.
