The Iranian military was so apprehensive about the threat of an Israeli airstrike on its nuclear installations in 2007 and 2008 that it mistakenly fired on civilian airliners and, in one instance, on one of its own military aircraft, according to classified American intelligence reports...

www.nytimes.com...

Iran apparently was a little nervous after Israel bombed the Syrian reactor site in 2007. Also noted in the article was the fact Iran built a target site simulating Dimona and Haifa for daily air-to-ground training.

Reminds me of the Cold War aviation mishaps and near-mishaps. Nervous people make mistakes.

So this happened 4 and 5 years ago? Interesting how it is being brought up now. Are they trying to paint Iran as hair trigger lunatics or something? Maybe with a view to getting a 'no fly zone' policy pushed through the UN? Not quite sure what the point of this Times article actually is.

Why would the UN want to establish a no-fly zone in Iran?

Possibly for the same reasons they pushed for a 'no fly zone' in Libya (and got it) and are in the process of pushing for a 'no fly zone' over Syria now too. It is the same tactic as used before and worked.

How would this report facilitate that hypothetical goal?

I call BS.

This information is unverified rumours from the US govt. You don't fire missiles at airliners, miss, and nobody notices? This info coming out from "US sources" is as reliable as US personell protection in Bengazi.

Not really aimed at the op, but there is NO evidence for any of these claims.

War on Iran anyone?
