I think the answer is pretty evident, probably not. It is our instinct to stay alive after all. But then, what if that stranger was a child? It gets harder to answer but then again, I would not kill my self to save this unknown child.

Now 10 strangers? Is my life worth more than 10 humans? I do not think so. If all life is equal than 10 lives out weight mine. But on which balance? I would still not do it for 10 strangers.

Now 100 strangers? Still wouldn't

1 million strangers saved by my sacrifice? In all honesty, I would not.

All of mankind? would you?

Since all my loved ones are included in mankind. I would. But If my loved ones were to stay alive and the rest of humanity had to die, I would probably let everyone die. Selfish I know...

Let's put it clear and simple. You have to shoot yourself in the head to save the 1 stranger, child, 100 person, millions or mankind.

In a dangerous situation, the hero thinks of others first and acts. The coward thinks of himself first, maybe doing nothing.

You would never know which one you are until presented with such situation.

But I would like to think I would sacrifice myself for a million people, anyone who wouldn't doesn't deserve to be alive imo.

I completely agree with you. I am just saying that I would not kill myself to save even a billion persons. I must be a coward then?

I guess I rather be alive and a coward than a dead hero.

Even if your name would be remembered by all of humanity for a million years?

My Ego will be gone with my brain. What satisfaction would it bring me.

Would you kill innocent lives to save yours?

Reminds me of something I once read.

Imagine your standing by a railway track. A few yards away the track forks. On one route there's a child on the track on the other there's a bum. A train is hurtling along the track. By pushing the lever to change the points you can send the train crashing into the child or into the bum.
Will you save the child or the bum?
Most people say they'd save the child and kill the bum.

Now...
Imagine your standing on a bridge, a bum is also on the bridge next to you. Below is a railtrack, and on the track is a child and a train is racing along the track. The only way to save the child is to throw the bum off the bridge into the path of the train.
Will you throw the innocent bum off the bridge?

Doesn't matter if it's a child or an old lady. If you're gonna save someone, throw misconceptions of age out the _

^ Bill Hicks, of course it contains "vulgarity"! And wisdom.

Would I do it? Not on purpose. I'd risk my life to save someone, but if shooting myself in the head means someone else gets to live, then what's the point? Someone's gonna die, someone's gonna live. If your life sucks then go ahead and pull the trigger, but if you have something to offer then either let them kill you or you go on. We all die anyway.

I think it is very easy for someone to say they would or would not sacrifice themselves, but the outcome could be completely different when presented in reality. In a life or death situation I would imagine our instincts for self peservation would take over. Then again, if one has time to think and then react, the results could be varied.
