Police Union Says ‘War-Like’ Detroit Is Unsafe For Visitors

My personal experiences in Detroit are as follows,
1975 was a fantastic visit for a rock concert at Cobo hall.

Had cony dogs after and a few beers in the parking lot all was good and fun.

1989 went back for the same thing at Cobo hall and when leaving we were called white bread.

1992 was my last trip there, leaving Cobo hall once again we were harassed and called lots of names being mainly due to our skin colour and our Canadian license plates on our car.

We foolishly stopped at a local Mcd's and the police inside escorted us right back out to our car and followed us for about 5 miles.

The cop was so amazed that we even entered that restaurant he was speechless for a few seconds, then asked us why we had a death wish......I kid you not all of the above is true.


The last visit was a bit of an eye opener as we never had seen armed police in a Mcd's up to that point in life.

We also met a lot of great people but the death threats overshadowed the last trip.


My two cents worth, and hell no I would never go back there again and no disrespect intended to the people of Detroit.

You won't see me agreeing with unions too much but on this issue I think I would have to.

Detroit is a hell hole. Everyone I have ever known from there would never go back if given a choice between Detroit and lake-of-fire-side property in Hell.

That last tale is a bit chilling to say the least. One on one is one thing, when you are with family/friends and face a large number it is another thing.

What rattled myself and my friends was that we were told flat out what we were doing was suicide and only a fool goes to Mcd.s in Motown at night.

There was four of us and not a one has gone back as far as I know.

The cop was really really nice and really really worried we would die on his shift (paper work) LOL

I personally feel like things are being blown out of proportion.

All these places were worse than they are now back in the 70s and early 80s. New York was terrible.

Now I don't mean to say its not bad, and something clearly needs to be done.

But I feel handing out fliers warning people away from the city is misguided.

People who grew up in the ghetto during those periods know things are bad now but they also know how much worse things have been.

With that said, it can't hurt to hand out fliers so I'm not really opposed to it, but I just see some things being thrown around. If Detroit is like a "Third World City" now what were these places back then?

Dearborn has the US's largest muslum population.

Detroit seems to be a failed experiment. I truly feel sorry for the citizens of Detroit, it's spiraled out of control with no end in sight. Murder capital, much higher than other US cities.

Odd that this thread popped up for I had been watching a lot of videos regarding Detroit the last few weeks, I'm not sure how I ended up on them, you know sometimes you're watching youtube and you just keep clicking videos and it takes to you strange places.


It;s a damn shame, if the police are too terrified and/or cannot handle the situation, I can't understand why the national guard isn't invovled, I mean thats what they are for right?

As some have suggested, maybe this is all by design?

But honestly, is this a surprise? I've avoided Detroit like the plague. Which is a shame as there are a TON of wonderful architecture there from the golden era I wanted to document.

The second one is how I remembered it from my short visit. It does look like an apocalypse movie. I also remember driving by abandoned neighborhoods with weeds feet tall. My driver explained that after the manufacturing moved out, especially car companies, there were no jobs. The property became worthless, and people just walked away because they could not sell it, and had no job to keep going.

I spoke to one man there who would not leave his home until he bought a new doberman to guard it while he was away, because there was no doubt his home would be ransacked before he returned.

It is no wonder the crime rate is so high there. Just imagine the hopelessness of those growing up in such an environment. That has got to affect your self-image and hope for the future. They should just shut the whole city down. Or else it will end up walled up like that movie Escape from New York, with no one but criminals living there, and law enforcement unable to control it.

The poster from law enforcement warning people away is no joke, and I really do not think it is a ploy for some other reason. I bet they really are tired of cleaning up the blood, and of having to escort out innocents who wander in, like the poster above.

LIttle to none.
And it's been that way for decades.

Detroit is close to bankruptcy.

No one seems willing or able to bite the bullet and make the necessary financial cuts needed.
Much of this DPOA campaign is likely geared toward the cuts they are being asked to make.

I doubt Detroit is any less or more safe than it was a year ago.

Beezer.. I think you just have not been paying attention. The decline of Detroit is very well documented. Jobs are gone. Factories closed up. High unemployment. People losing their homes on a mass scale. Crime began rising. The City itself has no money and is broke. Earlier this year the City of Detroit was exactly 7 days away from being completely bankrupt. What has happened to Detroit is no joke and as the local economy has tanked, crime has exploded. The City can not hire more Officers, there is no money. That is why what few they do have are overworked. There is no one else to do the job.

You can keep the $100 homes. If given a choice between Detroit and a rat infested sewer...you'd be safer in the sewer.

Detroit! The once was, heart, of America. That should tell you EXACTLY where the country's headed. God bless America, eh? Perhaps it's time to blow the dust off them B.I.B.L.E.s before you ask for all those "blessings". America is waaaaaaaaaaaay off base! Back to the basics!

They need to send in the State Militia. Let them clean it up. Show that us citizens can do it without more Federal intervention.

detroit has had that reputation since the time robocop came out.

and by the looks of detroit now, its seems they hit the nail on the head on how it would be in the future.

Maybe there's an opportunity right now in Detroit to set up an "Adventure Tourism" business. You'd call it surviving an economic collapse. The tour would consist of a group of you being dropped off on foot with just some simple bags in a bad area of town. Your goal would be to start by getting into one of the many abandon houses for shelter. And then working as a team you'd have to find your way on foot at night across the city. sleeping in abandon houses by day, seeing how far you can hike by night. And sort of pretending that you're in the middle of a collapsed city. What do you think?
