I do live in Thibodaux, and to give everyone a general idea where thibodaux and Morgan city is to the sinkhole. Both cities are down stream from the sinkhole. Thibodaux is on Bayou Lafourche where they have found bubble sites and is 25 miles downstream and Morgan City is across Lake Verret and down stream from the sinkhole by 20 miles. Between these two cities, the sinkhole and the coast there is almost half a million people living there, including me lol.

Lake Verret is still teaming with life, when I get a chance I will post a picture of a huge 200+ lb fish caught last week.

Another video out of a tree going down this morning in the same area. If you look at the trees in the backround when they zoom in - looks like a bunch more tree's are ready to go. I can't believe they have cars and equitment parked so close
- I don't know how to embed the video but Here it is

It is a risk they have to take to keep a good eye on the hole. The only man in that whole Parish that has the guts to go film these videos is John Boudreaux. He is the only official on the ground everyday working with/for the people getting these videos for them.

Ok, here is a map released showing the area that was sloughed in yesterday. Creeping closer to the brine tanks.

And to give everyone a reminder of the outline of the salt dome from an areal view. It probably has been a little over half a year since most probably looked at this map.

oh no cajunboy, Thibodaux, really ??
well, all i can suggest is prepare for the worst.

i really don't think i was tuned in to you, specifically, but, maybe i was

of all the communities in that area, those were the only 2 that gave me such a harsh chill.

i know it's never easy leaving 'home' but i sure hope you are seriously considering it.
especially if there is active bubbling in the area.

Lake Verret is still teaming with life, when I get a chance I will post a picture of a huge 200+ lb fish caught last week.
sweeeet, looking forward to that pic. kinda scares me though.
a 200lb fish is more than double me (98lbs)

although, i gotta wonder if the disappearing pond i saw in the news is a precursor for what could happen at Lk Verret. it's not like it hasn't happened before.

@AuntB - Morgan City is south of the sinkhole and the 'major' city south of the bayou that directly connects to the GOM.

does anyone know the direction where this recent slough occurred ?
my gut says it was to the south/SW but i'm only guessing.

@Olivine - you are simply outstanding !!! Thank You

wow, am i the only one noticing the amount of water that seems to have disappeared with them ?

on the 3rd still, can you identify (at least try) the disruption on the surface water INSIDE the boom ? (right side of the pic)
it doesn't look like wave action, but maybe some debris that was churned up or something ?

fyi, reportedly, someone from the Parrish forwarded video to our local news, BayNews9 and they played about 15 seconds or so, so i did get to see the trees sink and wow, what a catch.

it appears Mr Boudreaux seems to be at the right place, at the right time to get some real answers to questions on everyone's mind

way to go, Mr Boudreaux !!

where can i send that man a new spool of line so we can get a relative depth reading ????

side note -- 2 new sinkholes opened up in W-central FL today.
luckily, no lives lost or property damage reported but one emptied a pond and the last time i heard anything about the second one, news crews were on their way to the scene.

a few doors away, code enforcement has forced neighbors out of their home due to a potential sinkhole developing. their backyard connects to what we've always called a 'ditch' but it seems some ground movement has been detected and their home is visibly sinking so they've been told to move out

ETA -- wow you guys, that's a lot of videos ... i'm gonna have to commandeer a neighbor's computer this weekend so i can watch them
... thank you to everyone and please stay safe out there.

I am rather curious to find out if anyone has sent a camera down into the sinkhole yet, it doesn't seem like it would be difficult to do and might be revealing.

I don't think they know how deep it is..I think I read that the line ran out at 8K feet and they didn't add more line..can someone else confirm this?

The last update I've seen was on July 20th & he ran out of line at 750 feet with no hit.

From the blog:

John Boudreaux has reported another depth survey has been completed in the center of the sinkhole. A video has been posted on YouTube showing that 750′ of cord was used and all 750′ went down to bottom. This information has been sent to the Blue Ribbon Commission for there review.

I just remember reading about it the other night..glad you cleared it up!

I probably read 800 ft..not 8K...gheezsh..I need more sleep

Naaa, I was born and raised to love my area and I wouldn't leave it come hell or high water. If you are wondering the area that sloughed in, it was on the northeastern side of the sinkhole. Also, the bubble site was in Bayou Lafource in Assumption Parish, 20 miles up the bayou from Thibodaux. I am more worried about an oil seep through that bubble site.

Also, here is the alligator gar that was caught in Lake Verret near the sinkhole. I swim in that lake every summer and never knew gars were that big in the lake.

When I was a kid and used to visit my relatives down on the farm in Arkansas I would go fishing in the channels for catfish. Every once in a while I would get a gar on the line. You DID NOT want to put your fingers anywhere near that suckers mouith full of razor sharp teeth to get your hook back so I carried a .410 shotgun to blow it's brains out. Back then it was easier to get a box of shotshells than it was to get spare hooks. But none of the gar I caught came anywhere near the size of the monster in that picture.
