I'm sort of torn on the issue. I think everybody should be able to vote over the internet but then it comes down to the same argument as the voting machines. They can't be fully trusted or independently verified and that's where it all breaks down. Paper ballots on the other hand have their own problems, ala the "chads" in Florida. I really don't have a solution but would be open to suggestions.

Bring it on, pro-voters. Explain to me why, knowing what I know and feeling as I do, why I should participate in something that is basically already pre-determined, secretive and manipulated?

I agree with this. I used to think voting was my right and duty. I never missed going to the polls. I encouraged people to remember to go and vote. That was then. This is now.

Apathy has nothing to do with it. First, if I even could believe my vote counted, please tell me why I should vote for one of two people I do not believe would be right for the office? Second, since i think the election is suspect, why would i pretend to play the game and report for voting like a fool?

I will go to the polls and get my ballot and vote for local issues. These issues still seem to be where my voice and vote count.

But the dog and pony show of the presidential race? Not interested. What will happen is going to happen no matter how the "vote" goes.

Exactly! I was one of those voters who never missed a vote; rain or shine, I was there, and I was proud of participating in the election process. I was one of those who said, "If you don't vote, you don't have the right to complain".

I was one of those who voted for Obama in '08, thinking that I was making a difference.

I feel so foolish now, and so sad. Everything I grew up believing and cherishing, I now see as a total lie.

I believe that I represent the New American Non-Voter. We are disillusioned and disgusted. This is not democracy in action, this is a huge game of pretend, in which the end is predetermined, but we're not privvy to this information, so we just keep going through it, every four years.

The people who still choose to vote have my blessing, of course, but their holier-than-thou attitude stems from ignorance. We are all Americans. Until we all wake up and demand fair elections, in which the super-PACs aren't allowed to exist, in which all candidates are forbidden to take campaign donations, and instead all get the same amount of money from a pot in which all donations are put into, and until we get the media to give fair and balanced coverage to all candidates, no matter whether they be rich or poor, there will be a sizeable majority who will stay away from the voting booths on election day, and every four years it will get worse.

Of course, we could cease to exist as a nation within the next four years, as our economy collapses and our financial masters come to collect the land which has been given as collateral for the federal reserve debts, so perhaps this is the last time we'll have to go through this nonsense.

reply to Fission Surplus. Very well said sir, Democracy as we know it is a lie, an illusion of freedom. ordinary people need to belive they are participating in a system that they have a say in. They have no say. I used to be very politically active and gradually realised i was swimming against an age old tide. the only REAL form of democracy would be "proportional Representation" which basically means one person one vote.The fact is that model scares the hell out of the vested interest groups that manipulate us.

I'm 100% against all the "get out the vote" brouhaha. I'd immensely prefer anyone who doesn't see the point in voting not go to the polls. Anyone who needs any impetus at this stage to go vote sure hasn't done the necessary legwork to make an informed decision. Those people do us all a favor by not participating.

Anyone who doesn't see voting as a right, duty, and responsibility as a citizen doesn't deserve to be one. Unfortunately, it isn't a requirement to be an informed and engaged citizen. I weep for the millions who have come before us, toiling and fighting and dying, suffering hardships most of us will never be able to understand in some cases just to get here, to give us the right to live in a participatory government.

People who see no value in voting don't deserve to. So please, stay home. Not because your vote doesn't count, but because if you don't understand why it's important, your vote shouldn't.

If 75% sent a clear message, maybe, just maybe, these bastards wouldn't be able to hide it, even though I am sure they'd try. You need somebody independent standing there taking exit polls with a video camera that isn't a rep/dem/handler shill. The problem here is too that you have 4 candidates and you have that delegate/electoral college stuff going on which allows the system to be compromised. Somebody was thinking ahead LOL.

Living in a country that has compulsory voting I find it odd that people would not want to participate in their own democracy


How can you expect anything from a government when you dont even care enough to vote for one?.

By voting for candidates who clearly are not "for the people", we are allowing the downfall of our country to continue.

Thats why voter turnout is so important to our government. It directly projects our overall acceptance and approval of how its being run. I guarantee, a significant drop in voter turnout would get plenty of attention. And when they ask why, I would gladly tell them why.

We've been brainwashed to believe that if we don't vote, then we just don't care. I'm telling you, in our present day and age, that the exact opposite is true.

As far as the presidential vote goes, I'm going to have to say that I won't be. This is my first year to even be able to vote, so take it easy on me. I'm still learning the traits of it all. Seeing as how I was brought up in a family that doesn't believe in voting. But I just believe that both candidates are paid liars. I hope one day my vote does count, and we really have someone worth voting for.

Fortunately the state of NJ allows write in votes, as well as California, Wisconson, Iowa, Alabama, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont,Delaware and Pennsylvania.

What can be accomplished by not voting? That if it catches on, everyone gives up on democracy? How does it look for the whole world to see a record number of Americans no longer interested in voting? That doesn't sound like anything to be proud of. That sounds like apathy. Anyone who has lost faith in right vs left should consider an independent vote.
