New software uses smartphone camera for spying

www.washingtontimes.com

Researchers from the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center have developed malicious software that can remotely seize control of the camera on an infected smartphone and employ it to spy on the phone’s user.

The malware, dubbed “PlaceRaider,” “allows remote hackers to reconstruct rich, three-dimensional models of the smartphone owner’s personal indoor spaces through completely opportunistic use of the camera,” the researchers said in a study published last week.

Seems the government has been watching CBS's Person of Interest.

Watching the show I knew that turning a cell phone in to a clandestine means of surveillance was easily possible.

Clone cell phones have been possible almost since they were invented.

They now have the ability to know where you go(gps) who your talking to,what you are saying, and now tactical information.

Don't think Orwell even thought of this.

What say you?

I don't understand their motivation for revealing this.

Seems like something they should keep a secret.

Doesnt matter anyway.. in any secure building or office.. you lock your phones in a locker. Been this way for a long time and basically since phones started to have cameras and GPS its been this way.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Keep 'em occupied on something that isn't there.

And so what, Neo?? They dont need special software to spy through phones.. anything can be gleaned from any number of ways. This story is BS to manipulate or just plain old BS because some doof will buy it. You can spy online remotely for Gods sake. Roll your eyes at that. Your crap attitude is getting annoying.

I was always fearful of the webcam on my laptop being used in that fashion, but i guess it's no surprise that the phones would be a logical target as well since most new models have forward and rear facing cameras...twice the surveillance potential.

Well normally, unless I am on a video call, the phone is never looking at anything more interesting than either the ceiling, a table (depending on front/back camera) or the inside of a pocket.

If this is bs now, it won't be bs for long. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, I think our tech has already gone way beyond anything Orwell imagined.

What's scary is that the tech will only grow more discreet & invasive.

Why not just wrap the phone in heavy duty aluminum foil? You don't get bragging rights for spending $65-$150 which is more than some people spend on their phone, but it probably works just as well.

Yeah,. lets carry a role of aluminum foil around with us so we can rewrap the phone after each use..
good one., Most people would get to the $65 bucks in foil after a week.

The static bags you get electronic equipment shipped in is the best way to kill any signal on a phone.
