You only have to look at the history of the democratic party to understand that it is not the party of the true left.
The original name of the party was the Democratic-Republican Party. It was formed to counter the Federalist party to favour state rights over federal
control. Same thing the civil war was fought for. It was not a party for the workers.
It was an anti-federalist party. It was never a left-wing workers party, such as the Labour Party in the UK originally was (it isn't anymore).
American politics were never left-wing, no worker party was ever formed. Until the civil rights movement Blacks mostly supported the republican party.
Both parties have been, and can be racist. Both parties support capitalism over the workers. Both parties really are two sides of the same coin.
This is why we have to have unions.
The American Left consists of individuals and groups, including socialists, communists and anarchists, that have sought fundamental change in the
economic, political and cultural institutions of the United States. Although left-wing ideologies came to the United States in the 19th century,
there are no major left-wing political parties in the US. As a result, Americans frequently use the term "left-wing" to refer to radicalism or even
liberalism. Buhle, Buhle and Georgakas, p. ix
Yes it's Wiki, but it's a good article. American politics, and most of the worlds politics, is a con-game designed to create the illusion of
participation, while allowing the exploitation of the worlds working people by the capitalist class.
