This is on land and (revised) deep enough. There are towns close by so some damage could be sustained.

Wouldnt the depth of that earthquake reduce the impact of possible damage?

Indeed. It came up as 20km first but got very quickly revised.

Hopefully at the depth of 140km it should not be too bad.

EMSC just gone back up to 7.2

Update 16:38 UTC : This earthquake, which is not extremely dangerous if the preliminary data are correct (depth +150 km), will be felt ina very wide radius of hundreds of km. We do not have yet official data.
Update 16:46 UTC : Please omit the depth of Geofon in the listings. 10 km in in many cases reported as a “we do not know it yet” depth. Both USGS and EMSC are reporting a very weakening 168 and 140 km depth. This depth is normal as this is clearly a subduction earthquake generated by a moving Nazca plate who did hang below the continental South American Plate.
Update 16:49 UTC : A tsunami is NOT possible because of the epicenter who is located below land (far inland)
Update 16:54 UTC : First incoming reports are talking about a weak to very weak shaking, which is exactly what we did expect. In some cases a moderate shaking may be experienced, but we are quiet sure that this earthquake will not generate serious damage or injuries.
Important Update 16:57 UTC : USGS has just decreased the Magnitude from M7.4 to M7.1 at a depth of 150 km. These are very good numbers which confirm the incoming intensity (shaking) values

* 2 million people are expected to have felt a moderate shaking
* 14.5 million people a light shaking and 10 million people a weak shaking. These 3 shaking values are normally NOT generating any damage. Small cracks in walls and falling objects are often experienced though.

Looks as if this will not be too bad in the end.

USGS has this blurb concerning Nazca plate earthquakes at this depth:

Large intermediate-depth earthquakes (those occurring between depths of approximately 70 and 300 km) are relatively limited in size and spatial extent in South America, and occur within the Nazca plate as a result of internal deformation within the subducting plate. These earthquakes generally cluster beneath northern Chile and southwestern Bolivia, and to a lesser extent beneath northern Peru and southern Ecuador, with depths between 110 and 130 km. Most of these earthquakes occur adjacent to the bend in the coastline between Peru and Chile. The most recent large intermediate-depth earthquake in this region was the 2005 M7.8 Tarapaca, Chile earthquake.

So, they speculate that quakes at this depth are from internal deformation of the subducting slab, but todays earthquake is located north of where they normally expect to see this depth of quake. An oddball.

Earthquake is very strong but luckily it is deep. USGS estimates the maximum shaking of MMI V (moderate) in San Agustin, Isnos, Saladoblanco, Pitalito, Palestina, Timana, Florencia and Mocoa area.People of Pasto, Neiva and Cali will have felt light shaking of MMI IV.

These 6 to 7 sized earthquakes seem par for the course now a days, almost not worth mentioning. Were there this many before or was I just not paying attention as closely?

Yup! There are fewr this year of both 6 and 7 than for some years.

This one went back up to 7.3 by the way.

Something I noticed in regards to these larger earthquakes, when there is one, there will be another within days somewhere else....

or maybe I am just crazy.

They got it back up to 7.3. earthquake.usgs.gov...

On average about fifteen, 7+ earthquakes occur per year, so that's about 1 every 24.3 days.... so far over the past 45 days we had 5 so we're are averaging 1 every 9 days, lets see if this pace continues.
The magnitudes of the 5 quakes were nothing to joke about either, 3 of them were over 7.5, they were 7.7, 7.3, 7.6, 7.6 and 7.4

A lot of people post earthquakes, but I normally don't pay attention, I've always said if we start getting 7+ on a weekly basis or 8+ every other month or so, then there will be a reason to get concerned. So far it looks like we are getting on track for weekly 7+.

I'm no expert, but after we had the 8.2 and 8.6 earlier this year in April, we had no 7+ EQ for 4 months, it's like a calm before the storm and now we are getting these 7+ regularly.

That's a big one. I came on to post it since I checked the date better this time.

Guys, this is a large but VERY deep quake... SHOULD be minimal damage. Let's hope all of our Columbian friends are cool as a cucumber... Java por va for...
