Briton Chris Collier, 40, has been jailed for 24 years for battering his Russian 'mail order' wife Julia, 35, before smothering her to death after discovering that she had undergone a sex change.

Postings in an internet forum used by expat Brits claimed to be Collier.

One said: 'I paid for my wife and then moved to Kusadasi in my rented apartment.'

It went on to add that the woman 'used to be a bloke'.

A friend of Collier, who did not want to be named, said the couple had been married for a number of years, but had no children.

She said: 'Chris went out to Turkey to make a new start over 10 years ago.

'Julia was just the nicest girl you could ever meet.

During his trial, the court heard he had knocked his wife unconscious with a hard object before smothering her.

I can certainly understand why he was angry. Its one thing to be a transsexual. Its another thing entirely to marry a man who doesn't know you used to be a man too.

How selfish do you have to be to marry someone without telling them you are a transsexual?

How could they have been married for several years and he didn't know? How did he find out? I can see how he would be angry at the deception, but if he loved her after several years of marriage, would that not have made a difference? Afterall, it is the inner person you love not the outer shell, I tend to think if you go so far as having a full on sex change then perhaps you really are a male suck in a female body and vice versa, so really the inner person was just getting a matching body. Perhaps that is a bit of a simplistic cut and dry way of looking at things, but it is how I see it. He could just have left her rather than killing her.

I have to agree with you, this guys overreaction cost the life of someone, although not entirely innocent herself, she did not deserve to die over this
