Spanish police have identified the body of an alleged ringleader of the March train bombings in Madrid, which killed 191 people. They have named him as Allekema Lamari, one of seven key suspects who blew themselves up when police raided their apartment following the bombings. Spanish authorities describe Lamari as the "emir" of the train bombings.

The Algerian became a prime suspect when his fingerprints were found on a book of Koranic verse at the flat. An Islamic group with links to al-Qaeda is blamed for the attack.

The bombs, left on commuter trains on 11 March, injured hundreds. More than 50 people have been arrested and questioned over the last months, and 16 or more remain in custody on provisional charges.

Forensic tests on the saliva of the Algerian"s parents have confirmed his identity. Lamari is described by Spanish authorities as the "emir" of the train bombings, the BBC"s Danny Wood reports from Madrid.

In 1997, Spain charged him with belonging to an Algerian extremist group.

The other men who blew themselves up include a suspected co-ordinator, Serhane ben Abdelmajid Farkhet. The suspected intellectual mastermind, Rabei Osman Ahmed, is awaiting extradition from Italy.
