There is a pretty good show on HBO series called The Newsroom
Its about a news anchor, a republican, that has been basically compromising himself for years for ratings..he is trying to walk the line for ratings and seemingly "fair". Eventually he caves and decides he wants to use the desk to try and win back his party from the fringe nuts..so he goes on the attack against the republicans and their endless lies, spin, and distortions.

This is a common theme on the left that we see not only in the "entertainment", but in the media. the left wing MSM loves to puff up "Republicans" who hate their party and parrot left wing Democrat talking points. To list a few:

-Kathleen Parker (She admitted she's popular in the media because she bashes conservatives)
-David Brooks
-Joe Scarbrough

You won't find counter parts on the left. Those that break from the left wing DNC narrative are castigated and destroyed. Not to mention, the creator of that show is a far left loon who is known for trashing people who aren't on his team.

So basically, you're being played. You're totally oblivious to it too, which is depressing. Way too many drone like people taking comedy shows, propaganda media and cable TV shows as facts and gospel. Enjoy being a trained seal.

Assuming you haven't watched the show then?

If you have, what do you disagree with?
If you haven't, why are you commenting on something without knowledge?

Haven't you figured it out yet that people such as myself don't give a damn about the Democratic party. I'm a Republican. I am trying to inform people and make changes from within.

You have problems with the Dems? Ask a Dem to make the change happen.

There is no point in me trying to point out the hypocrisy and issues of the Democratic party when I have no skin in the game. But when our representatives and our so-called conservative media has built up an unfathomable structure of lies, propaganda and deceit....in my name.....we have a problem!

So instead of pointing the finger towards the Dems, why don't you, me and the rest of our fellow Republicans put down the BS and try to figure out how we are going to make the Republican party a party that once again believes in morality, truth, compassion and works in the best interest of ALL Americans. Not just the NeoCon media and those up for re-election.

That being said, it would be stupid of me to say that these media outlets are not biased in one way or the other. We all are. I am trying to suggest that one section of our political spectrum has swayed so far to one side that we can no longer afford to blow-off or deny it any longer.

Good journalists work very hard to report the news - the facts and just the facts

Bias is unavoidable - and you can easily see that some news is left-leaning - some right leaning. But, it's not hard to find good journalism from both camps if we bother to look. Also, leaning is not the same as slanting - it's not the same as spin

I try to read as much as I can from everywhere - but certain segments of right-leaning journalism went straight down a rabbit-hole a while back - someplace I just couldn't follow if I wasn't looking for laughs

It's up to the reader to look for the truth - buyer beware applies to the news as much as anything else. And we all have a tendency to read what appeals to us - and that's usually something in line with what we already believe

I love this thread - love it

I think that may be an example of the information Bias at play.

It gets kind of annoying when you see in the media and on here this thought that the Left has the monopoly on intelligence and free thinking open mindedness.

If it wasn't a violation of TOS, I could list all the members I have seen being just as stubborn as the right. Watch an Episode of Bill Maher if you want to see the same kind of rhetoric being spouted by the left.

Its not till you step back from both parties, and see it as the game it is (For christ sake theres team mascot's .) that you understand its all manipulation to keep the masses at bay.

If we all stopped drinking the MSM koolaid we would be marching on Washington DC with pitch forks and torches.

People need to stop banging the "my teams better" drum, there are no teams, its just Americans being abused by those in power.

I don't watch Bill Maher, he's just the other side of the Fox coin, in my opinion. As a long term republican though I sympathise with the OP, I've watched my party devolve into what it is today. I voted Republican all my life up until 2008, and haven't been sorry for a millisecond. Almost all the hard working, intelligent, honest people I know now are life-long democrats, that tells me something.

I did comment on the topic. And I commented on YOUR comments.

like a child on an elementary school playground,

Got your feelings hurt because I spoke the truth? Looks like it.

And can you really compare the Right-Wing machine to the pussyfoot Left that cannot even agree with each other?

If you don't think that there is a strong right wing machine AND a strong left wing machine then you are a perfect example of what I was talking about. To use your words ... it's staring you right in the face and you refuse to see. The Soros machine. The Union machine. The ACORN machine. The Hollywood machine. The enviro-nuts blowing up car dealerships. The code pink whackos. The race baithers. MSNBC. CBS. etc etc. It's all there.

MSNBC, even though they are openly progressive, are much more open to opposing opinions than FoxNews or any NeoCon talking head.

You actually buy that??

You do know that Maher is a libertarian right?

Only on paper.

I hope you can objectively look at this and see what is going on. If you can't....

Obviously you can't. You are to the left EXACTLY what you complained about for the right.
Thanks for proving my point so well.

Once again all you've done is said things and punctuated them with obnoxious laughing emoticons to make yourself feel funny. Your post has no substance, proof, or even validity. I've already stated, as a lifelong Republican I became increasingly disturbed by this trend in my party. I found the Democrats far more likely to amend their positions based on evidence, and far less vitriol, with the exception of a few. Bill Maher is, actually, a Libertarian, so you can't fall back on that. And having watched Fox News' excuse for journalism I'll take Rachel anyday. Sexual orientation and party affiliation do not automatically make me dismiss someone's take on things. You should try it.

I used to love coming to ATS because I could read up on more than just political B.S.

Unfortunately, it's turned into one site-wide "Rep vs Dem" pissing match and quite frankly, it bores the living # out of me.

Well, she is right about the self-contained Republican media universe - but that happens to a lesser extent with the liberals, as well. I think the video is important because of her statement "How can you even talk to those people anymore."

The right and left have basically become separate entities with little communication between them. When this happens, it increases the chance that members of either sect will view members of the other sect as sub-human.

The farther apart the two sects drift, the more likely they are to justify hostilities towards each other.

Yeah, you're a republican conservative, riiiight, sure, I believe that, mmm hhhm. And I will add, yep, I'm no fan of Howard Stern!!, but listen to this interview and you will realize that Obama is really counting on the vote of people that don't listen to any news at all. In this clip they do a dozen or so interviews and no one knows Osama bin Laden is dead, and some think Obama is a Mormon while Romney is black, some like Obama's pro-life and anti-gay marriage stance, McCain is running again, Paul Ryan is black and is Obama's VP pick, etc., completely unbelievable but sadly true.

Howard Stern exposes the Obama voter

We also have to realize that the Republican party has become the masters of the new Nazi propaganda machine! These guys know how to make people fall in line and believe anything, even when it insults the intelligence of everyone else. Sometimes I wonder if we should blame the GOP for their actions, or blame the people that are dumb enough to actually buy it!

That was from December. Now you come out quoting Maddow trying to sound like a Republican who is coming to the Obama "Jesus". I don't buy it for a second. Maybe your a Ron Paul supporter who is pissed. I don't think you understand the two party system. The left is more open to debate? Really? The hard core of either side are not open to debate, period. The difference is one side may listen to you rant while the other tells you to shut up. I don't think your changing any minds though.

I smell something, what is that smell?

When Bush was President the left hammered him night and day. Politics is a dirty business. Nothing here is new, the Right isn't doing anything that hasn't been going on by both sides forever.

I can agree to a certain extent and I'm sure that I will get flamed for this, but with all my dealings on this forum and in real life conversations, Democrats are much more receptive to opposing opinions and are more willing to change their opinion in the face of clear-cut evidence.
...

I would have to say that is not true. I have seen the left in general, not just democrats, refuse truth, such about the truth about anthropogenic Global Warming and the real reason why it is being pushed and has become a religion of the late 20 and 21st century.

I do have to agree that the Republican party has become very corrupt, to this day I still wish they would endorse Ron Paul, even though I don't agree 100% with him, I think many of his views are the only way we can get rid of the problems we are facing, as well as getting rid of the corruption which has taken a hold of this nation since at least 1913.

I don't agree with most of the views of Rachel Maddow, but I do know that sometimes she hits the nail, she did a very good explanation of how unConstitutional Obama's indefinite detention is, but I have also seen in overall most in the left, at least in these forums do not want to accept the fact about their Messiah.

Democrats are using every dirty tactic in this election, from class warfare, which is a communist view for those that don't know, to lying to the public and exagerating.

I won't say that Bush did everything good, I do agree that there were a lot of things he did which are unConstitutional, but Obama has done things worse, yet the democrat party, and the left in general is claiming that things are better because of him... They even claim to this day that Osama was killed because of Obama, when in fact it was the military who had been searching for him for years who actually killed him, and it is them who should be thanked for this.

I also think that we need to clean house, in both parties, as well as the House, the Senate and the White House.

BTW, did you know that Homeland Security is 40% unionized? The very people who are pushing for more draconian laws.

Unions are also a big problem in this country. If you are a member of a Union you HAVE to vote democrat always, they brainwash people into voting for Democrats/liberals. They don't want people to have their own voice. A lot of people claim Unions are good, but in fact, they are not. Not only do you have to pay fees to be part of the Unions, but you also must do as their boses tell them.

Unions are part of the legalized mafia of these days imo. They are corrupt to the core, biased politically, and imo, they should also be cleaning house.

should there be something similar to unions? yes, but not in the way they are set up, because they don't give a voice to the people, unless the people agree 100% with what the union boses want.

The corruption in this country has reached every level, and tier of this nation, from government, to high schools, colleges and universities to the point that it might be impossible to get rid of it all, but if we don't change the way things are.

Teachers shouldn't be brainwashing children to obey, and cheer for any particular leader, this is indoctrination, and it has reached a crecesdo with this President not seen ever before to the point that even wrong things/legislation this President has done and signed into law are overlooked or praised altogether.

WOW...yeah I agree with you, something smells funny... The NAZIS were SOCIALISTS, so if anyone is using NAZI propaganda it is the left, and not the right...

BTW Hitler also used class struggle as a tactic, which was part of the reason for his success in attaining the hearts and minds of the Germans... Not to mention Hitler's youth are similar to today's Obama's youth...

Dear sheepslayer247,

Thank you for your thorough response to my question about how one extreme party would hurt the Republic. What was in my mind, but apparently not in my fingers, was that people would leave a party that was truly extreme, with ideas that Americans could not support, and turn to the more moderate party. In short, one extreme party, I thought, would be self-correcting.

I believe there are a few reasons.
Thank you for providing examples. They all seem to be policy decisions, taken by one party, that you see as bad. Ok, I can understand that. But these are also policy decisions that were made with the approval of the people or their representatives. We can call one party or the other "extreme," but we may have to redefine the word if it means a position which the people and Congress want.

You did mention something that should give you great hope. Talking about the Republicans reducing themselves to a white, male party, gives some interesting numbers. According to the Statistical Abstract, for 2009 (The most recent year I could find) There are roughly 112 million white males, and 151 million blacks and white females. That puts white males at a little under 45% of the population. The Democrats don't need to worry with numbers like that, do they? Or perhaps the Republicans are a more inclusive party than some think.

What would cause the majority to follow a party?

What this really boils down to is language. How does each party project their message? With words and marketing strategies. When you message consists of propaganda and lies to gain favor through outrage....it will quickly bring the outraged into it's fold.
Here is one place where you lose me. Are you saying that the Democrats, from the purity of their hearts, refuse to use the same techniques Republicans do to sway people to their side and get out the vote? I hope that's not what you're saying.

A popular message is one reason
You're right, and that's how you win elections.

or possibly it's because some parties make it easier to be a member. It's easy to be a Republican. You don't have to worry about fact and you don't have to worry about defending your ideology because if people raise question or ridicule it....you can just blow them off as simple idiots.
Isn't that true of both parties?

I don't know, I still haven't seen anything to contradict the evidence of the Pew Study showing liberals less tolerant to opposing opinions than conservatives. As Bill Buckley said, "Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views."

With respect,
Charles1952
