Not having lived Down Under, I could use a definition of Labour and Liberal parties. That would help me to understand where you are coming from. Are they seemingly opposed to one another or more similar? What are the party platforms according to Aussie definitions?

My apologies. Labour and Liberal are the 2 major parties in Australia, which i guess would be the equivalent of the Republican and Democrat parties in the US. They both like to give the impression that they are opposed to each other so that we get the impression of having a choice, but the reality is they are all feeding from the same trough, and attending the same private functions behind the scenes.
I'll try and explain it to the best of my knowledge, but i think Labour would be the equivalent of your Republican party, and Liberal would be the equivalent of your Democrat party. We have smaller, or minor parties that never get enough outright votes to win an election, so under our system of preferential votes, any vote for a smaller, minor party will end up going to either Labour or Liberal, depending on which side the smaller party has done a deal with in advance to the election.
This is how John Howard won the elction in the 1990's, by doing a last minute deal on the night before the election with a new party that just came on the scene with a groundswell of support called the One Nation party. One Nation didn't quite get enough votes to win outright, despite receiving more votes at a first up election than any other political party in Australian history, so their votes went to Liberal without most of the population knowing that a vote for one Nation was actually a vote for Liberal.
Most people now know that a vote for a smaller party is basically a wasted vote, so then the choice is a 50/50 flip of the coin and voting Labour or Liberal. And this brings me back to my original question of why do people align themsleves to one political party and only vote for that party regardless of its policies, whether it be in the US or in Australia, or anywhere with a 2 party system ?
Another thing that makes me laugh is, if Hillary Clinton had of beaten Obama for the Democrat party candidate, then the US would of had a father/son [Bush] or a husband/wife [Clinton] combination have the top job in your country for a 20+ year period in a population of approx.250 million people. I realise that Obama did beat Hillary, but she was the only other candidate standing at the end and the only other option to Obama, and only one step away from carrying on that 20+ year monopoly of the presidentcy. And she now holds the position of Secretary of State which in all reality has just as much power as the top job. Yet people still side with one party, they still think their vote counts, and they still think they are living under the banner of democracy, but WHY ?

Thanks for your reply, and i hope i've answered your question well enough, if not then please let me know and i'll try again in a different way.

WRONG, there are other people around the world who also embrace the idea of small government, as in the government not having all the power...

It is a fake one as well, because American conservatives, just like the Anti Federalists,
want power to be given back to the states.

Really?... then I guess the Founding fathers of this nation were all fakes according to you...

Unfortunately the states used their power to institutionalized slavery, bigotry, sexism and racism.

Acually it was the Democrats who wanted to keep slavery, bigotry, sexism and racism in the United States... The Republicans were the ones that helped liberate the slaves, women in Republican cities, such as New York back in the old days were allowed more liberties than the women in the south and in Democrat states/cities...

Again, you are not showing much knowledge on the topic you are discussing...

Conservatism and Liberalism are a continuum, they can accompany things from politics to
religious beliefs to traditionalism.

Democrats did rule the south, they were able to keep slavery and Jim Crow happen due to
asserting states rights and resisting a big federal government. Modern day conservatives have descended
from this political struggle, which is why the Jim Crow south is still overwhelmingly populated with
conservatives.

But I bet you are also gonna say that the South embraces Liberalism ?

I don't know if you are a child, or if you wear a helmet, but whatever the case,
you need to get out of the echo chamber, Hitler was not a hippie and neither was
Governor Wallace.

I hope you don't speak in public, you should refrain from it at the very least.

Again, you have done nothing at all to disprove any of the facts I wrote, and the excerpts and links I provided. Instead you have shown ignorance in almost everything that you have written in this thread.

I won't go down to petty ad hominem attacks as you have done, and it is obvious it is not even worth it to respond to your ignorance.

Anyway, to anyone else who would rather discuss the topic, it is obvious, and thanks to another member that we have found out that the OP seems to be lying to further some sort of agenda for the left.

I wouldn't even have brought up the facts about NAZI (National Socialist) Germany if we hadn't been shown that the OP believes that "republicans are using NAZI propaganda", which shows how little the OP, among some others, really know about NAZI Germany.

Although Rachel Maddow once in a blue moon says something intelligent, and notable, it is obvious that this particular point is nothing more than a play at politics with a bias to leftwing politics on her part.

You provided crap, frankly.

If you noticed, you are the only person deluded enough to keep it up.

You have proven the OP's point 1,000,000 over

Sorry, but it looks like this is just a partisan hack job. If she had said that both the right and the left have supporters that fail to accept truth and refuse to be receptive to opposing opinions then her statement would have merit. As it is, it's just her being typical far left (like she usually is).

There are times that I disagree with you, but on this I agree with you.

It also seems that we are getting some people again claiming "I was once a Republican but now I see the light and I am a Democrat" which usually is a lie and a tactic to further an agenda.

We all know and have read the threads and fact that the Obama team are paying people to infiltrate websites like this one to "spread their truth through lies"...

You have got to wonder how many of those people are, and have posted in this thread...

Lost of them. They usually start out with "I voted for Obummer last time but...."

Funny the projecting you do.

I don't want to reply to any specific post so as to not hurt any feelings, but it is very obvious that some people do not know what socialism is.

The word itself is not inherently bad. It's the context in which it's used.

We are all socialists. All of our governments are socialist. There are Marxist socialists, Democratic socialists...and on and on.

The problem is not socialism. The problem is the government and people that do very bad things and it is convenient for certain modern political strategies to demonize the word socialism due to the past actions of extremists.

The context of the word has been hijacked for partisan political purposes.

Sure, let's start banning people for having a different point of view...

We can't have anyone posting evidence, and facts, and discussing them when they contradict your own can't we?...

Not banning people for differing viewpoints, but calling them out for spreading disinformation.

This subject can't get enough attention... This problem, the disinformation echo chamber of the Right makes it nearly impossible to talk to Republicans. The motivation behind this level of disinformation is so evil. Forget party affiliation, I don't understand how any free thinker could not be completely repelled by this.

This is exactly what it means to deny ignorance.

Just a quick question. Have you considered the possibility that, with the attitude you've just expressed, a Republican wouldn't want to talk with you?

You might want to pick one issue and approach someone with it, using peace, politeness, and facts. But, just a thought. It may or may not appeal to you.

I would say it is the exact opposite. I am quite capable of discussing politics with Republicans right up until they plug their ears and start yelling "NANANANANA I CANNOT HEAR FACTS AND LOGIC!!!"
Eventually you get to sound like the above poster.

Socialism is the period after overthrowing the capitalist government but in-between full blown communism. You can't be socialist and be anti-communist at the same time. They are nearly the exact same thing.

I can agree to a certain extent and I'm sure that I will get flamed for this, but with all my dealings on this forum and in real life conversations, Democrats are much more receptive to opposing opinions and are more willing to change their opinion in the face of clear-cut evidence.

As this video attempts to point out, the hard-Right tends to be an "island" in which it is cut-off from the outside world and anything other than accepted dogma and rhetoric is not allowed to penetrate their inner sanctum.

So while I can agree somewhat, the Republicans are on a completely different level than the Democrats.

Both pander to the extremes of their own party

Actually, the Democrats pander to the Right. They have tossed their ideology to the side to appease people on the right.

Of course this is merely your opinion....I myself have come across hard-Leftists who will preach love, compassion and understanding.....but once you start to question their beliefs then watch out. Do what I say and not what I do is an adequate mantra for some of the left I have met (and don't even get me going about the Democratic-ATS membership)

You might as well as say the word is bad because all the good intentions that are implied are an impossibility.

I've tried. You can't talk to the people who only listen to the right wing disinformation machine. FOX News is lies. That's the truth and it can't be said loud enough or often enough. The entire mainstream Right have totally aligned themselves with ignorant propaganda. Truth is truth.
