A series of bombs have exploded at Baghdad churches early this morning. The targets have all been Christian churches. Officials have been worried about a wave of violence since the beginning of Ramadan. There are no reported casualties at this point. Minor damage has been reported at the churches.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A string of bombs exploded at five churches across Baghdad early Saturday though no casualties have been reported, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said.

The explosions rang out in quick succession over an hour and half starting at 4 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in the Nafaq Al-Shurta area, said ministry spokesman Col. Adnan Abdul-Rahman.

The other churches hit were St. Jacob"s Church and St. George"s Church in the Doura neighborhood, the Church of Rome in the Karrada neighborhood and St. Thomas Church in the Mansour area.

The targeting of Christian churches would appear as if someone is sending a message. This is not the first time that churches in Baghdad have been targeted. In August, four churches were attacked killing 7 and wounding dozens.

More information when it becomes available.

A pretty desparate attempt to stir up Christian/Muslim tension, and play to any anti-islamic feeling in the West.

This is yet another attack against the ordinary Iraqi people.

What is the percentage of Christians in Iraq? Anyone know? Before the latest war I didn't realise there were Christians in Iraq. Tariq Aziz being the highest ranking in the regime.

Probably the message is: The US is screwed in Iraq and the Administration needs to build more sympathy for the war, so they paid some of the 15,000 + non-DoD mercenaries over there to blow up some churches.

Iraq is an officially secular country and was during the Hussein era. Christians and Muslim Iraqis got along. Now all of a sudden they're blowing up all the churches? Uh-huh.

Insight | June 8, 2004 | Ken Joseph Jr.

The long-predicted exodus of Christians from Iraq has begun.

Facing a June 30 deadline for transfer of power, a temporary constitution that reads, in Article 7, that Islam is the "Official Religion of the State," and the most recent humiliation for the community -- the failure to receive even one position on the Executive Council and only one ministry post, the Ministry of Emigration -- the Christians of Iraq are voting with their feet.

"On a recent night the church had to spend more time on filling out baptismal forms needed for leaving the country than they did on the [worship] service," says Amir, a deacon at a local church who does not want his full name published. "We have been flooded with parishioners desperate to leave the country, and as they cannot get an exit permit without a baptismal certificate from the church we have been swamped with requests. ... In recent days nearly 400 families as far as we can tell have filled out baptismal forms to leave the country. Our community is being decimated."

Most of the Christians in Iraq are Assyrians -- people who claim to be the original inhabitants of Iraq. The Assyrians were the people of Nineveh -- present-day Mosul -- the city to which God sent the biblical Jonah.

Because they are Christians and seen as allies of the West, the Assyrians have long been subject to persecution. The Assyrian Church, known officially as the Assyrian Church of the East, is the oldest continually existing church in the world. Assyrians are the only people in the world who still speak Aramaic, the language spoken by Christ.

So, part of the whole War on Terrorism by blowing up Iraq has produced a mass exodus of Christians from Iraq, so that fundamental Muslims control yet another country.

Great. Yet another awesome strategy from the Bush White House. Too bad they mistook the blooper section of the "Art of War" as the actual book.

Taibunsuu and MattMrriott,

I agree with you, if it was something Sadam did "right" was to keep all religions in check, now look the mess.

Whoa at least that one is something the administration could to pin on Sadam.

Yes! Let us all praise the Almighty Peacemaker Saddam Hussein, friend to children and the weak, saviour of his nation, defender of freedom worldwide, and benevolent ethnic cleanser. Let us pray to Allah in his Holy Name.

Hummmm......Grady you made a mistake in the names, it should be more like the Almighty peacemaker bush/dick chenney, friend of the women and children and weak in iraq, saviour of iraq and US nations, defender of freedom (as long as he does not tag you a terrorist" ) worldwide, and benevolent ethnic cleanser (middle easter islamic christian hater iraqis) let us pray to "god" (Sadam was not islam) and let kill in his holy name.

See Grady I fix it for you.

And that my children is another example of how Religion relates to Microbiology! Much like viruses, they spread normally without notice, a great example is the pacifist Buddist virus, causing no great notice. But the Islamic Virus spreads virulently! Forcing other viruses and macrobiota it invades to convert or die, a truly evil virus it even attempts to tell the virus it is attacking that the attack is good for it (a similar effect is seen in the political Bush/Cheney virus) and that all will be peace and love when the attack is finished.

Stir up Christian/Muslim tension?
Dude wake up, most muslims don't make a secret out of their opinion on Christians and Christianity, there's really nothing to stir up here.
