I've just got back from the shop, I was talking to some friends outside the pub about ten minutes ago and (what I thought was fireworks for the first few seconds) a bright streak shot across the sky breaking into lots of bits. I ran round the corner and it disappeared over either Scotland or Ireland. I need to get my bearing once I have calmed down and I will post a map of its heading.

I tried to get pics, by the time I got into the camera it was long gone.

Sorry if this is in the wrong area, I am a little shaken with excitement, and a little nervous as this was fairly big compared to most I have seen.

Did anyone else witness this? (21/09/2012, approx 23:00)

Edit: Sorry about the massive bit, that's just excitement, chances are it was probably fairly small, about the size of a small car, but they tend to produce big and dramatic fireballs)

Second Edit: Ok, this is direction and location, I am where the X is....

Story now on the BBC

'Meteors' sighted in skies across UK

'Meteors' sighted in skies across UK

People from across the UK have reported seeing bright objects in the sky, thought to be meteors.

Belfast coastguard has taken calls from people who saw the objects from Coleraine on the north coast, to Strangford Lough in the south east. Sightings were also made in Dublin.

The lights were also seen in parts of central Scotland including Grangemouth, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

And the suspected meteor has been seen in Norfolk and the West Midlands.

I'm in Cheshire and my daughter and I have just seen it - it was seriously big and a little worrying to be honest!

I've been searching for anything 'expected' but not having much luck.

As amazing as it was that was HUGE!

Although there was no chance of it hitting, would have fully broken up, even if it was large enough, it would take some time for the airburst to hit us, so we wouldn't yet know.........

I know you're just joking, but by the time I realised it wasn't a firework, ran to the end of the road, tried to open the camera app with my now shaking hands, it was too late, I'm just glad many others seen it.

One of several videos posted. Seems too slow for a meteor. More like space junk.

I'm not gonna lie... I'm a little bit jealous. I saw the aura's once and thought I had seen some cool stuff. I can only imagine a huge fireball!

I hope it was a meteor...

If its space junk will it poison us? Have you any info on what junk it might be? How long should I hold my breath?

No. No. As long as you can, if you want.
