They have always been around. What's new is media fearmongering and drewling over every sad story they can get their hands on.

Honestly, even if they had been outside playing by themselves...So what? Age 9 and 6?

My parents let me go outside and play alone younger than that. In fact, my whole neighborhood was like that.

I remember getting into trouble with my best friend at age 3....Alone. Okay, maybe 3 is too young ( We chopped down some ones hedge with plastic toy golf clubs....And I got my butt beat for that one) but I mean come on.

I know of tons of people who were out playing alone as young kids.... Are we really that over protective now days? Arresting some one for potentially letting their nine and six year old out to go play by themselves?

Then to find out she was there with them the whole time? Crappy investigating done and a ridiculous reaction to what equates to nothing more than kids playing......

I just saw like 4-5 kids plaing outside in my sub yesterday. None of them could have been older than 7 and there were no parents around.

And it wasn't a big deal.

We used to do that all the time.

So kids can't go play football , baseball, tag, hide and seek, because parents aren't there with them ?

That lady who called the police is EVERYTHING that is wrong with people in this country.

She was probably jealous about something and a control freak who thinks she can do whatever she wants.

I hope she does take that neighbor to court.

i'm thinking the old bitty neighbor, has something against kids.
maybe she didin't like the noise they were making, or she doesn,t like the family.

I hope she sues the neighbor and wins enough money for the neighbor to lose their house.

I had a pain in the butt neighbor like this. She would constantly complain that my kids would play (even quietly) in my fenced in back yard... "Why can't they play in the front yard?" - mind you, an unfenced front yard.

She finally put up a 6 foot privacy fence up against my already existing chain link fence. After that, she still had the audacity to complain.

I finally decided to really piss her off (since she was unreasonable to begin with) and bought a 14 foot wide trampoline and placed it right up against the property line so she had to keep seeing the kids bouncing up over the privacy fence. She took the hint and finally shut the heck up.

It's amazing the amount of damage that can be done by a "tip" call to cops.

I saw a city block shutdown, thousands evacuated, and the FBI called in for some spilled baking flour on a sidewalk six years ago.

Absolutely blew my mind.

It's the ultimate prank. As long as you claim your concern was sincere you have families broken up, people locked up, entire urban centers evacuated and even people killed.

Life shouldnt be like this.

But even worse than the neighbor in this story is the DA who sanctioned the arrest!!!

I see kids no older than 5 taking the metro by themselves everyday in DC.

Where's the outrage?

and to think when was a child i would play in the woods all the time, and anywhere else for that matter with no 'supervision' at all.
the golden years of youth are now sacrificed on the altar of fear.
were we really so much more capable as youth back in the seventies? i really dont know but anymore are children are being bred to not be allowed to think or act for themselves.
the future of humanity has become occulted by our ever expanding fear.

between the ages of 7-12 i rode my bike to school every day, and had a couple regular hangouts, 1 mile, 1 mile, and 2 miles away from my home respectively, and thats as the crow files. following the city streets it was more of course but i was out of sight and earshot of my parents the majority of the time. i did stupid things and had fun with my friends and nothing too bad ever happened, and nothing that wasn't the result of our own stupidity. whats happened? this was only 20 years ago at latest. wow, its actually been a while lol.

What??? You were unsupervised AND you got spanked? I believe we need to open an investigation of your parents ASAP! Maybe we need to have you removed from the home/family/town....

Yeah, this story pisses me off as well. I had a bike, and I roamed far and wide....based on this premise, my mom would have been thrown into prison many times over.....

Hell, at the age of 12 me and my friends were out on the farm unsupervised WITH SHOTGUNS AND RIFLES....can you imagine the uproar over that scenario these days? I guess I didn't see the advantages of growing up in the 70's in a more rural setting ( and being brought up in a world with more common sense and less PC BS ). Of course there is a time and a place for everything...I live in So Cal now, and no, I wouldn't want to see ANY of these urban youths out running around with guns......that would be a disaster waiting to happen.
We didn't have First Person Shooter video games ( loaded with violent scenes )...we had the real thing, and were educated on how to respect firearms, and how to use them safely....

This is disturbing on multiple levels...the government taking parental Rights away, trampling all over your Civil Rights, not to mention your dignity. All because some old bat made a phone call?
Where was the evidence?
Why wasn't the neighbor charged with filing a false report?
I hope this family kicks her arse with the lawsuit....

Admittedly I'm very Liberal in my views and politics, but when the Over-Educated Idiots start trumping common sense, then there is a problem.

Wow, this floors me...when I was 6 or 9 I was off god knows where building forts and climbing trees, riding my bike and god knows what else...so long as my parents knew where I was going and I was home before the street lights...it was all good in the hood...

I wouldn't doubt the goal of conditioning kids to being supervised at all times...once their used to it at a young age they won't question it when their an adult...when big brother or your parents (government) is supervising you while you are outside...

I can't say I'm surprised but that still doesn't make it any more comfortable to see coming true...

I think there's a lot of hyping about this case, so I take it with a grain of salt.

The one thing this technology does is it greatly increases information flow.

Maybe all of these gadgets make us feel vulnerable somehow.

More information is supposed to make us better, more comfortable.

So why would it make us feel the reverse? Make us feel we have to supervise our children 24/7? Could it be that we've grown so used to being connected that we can't live without it 24/7? You know, millions of people play online games where EVERYTHING is within reach. Think about that. In an online game, everybody has a name floating above them. And when you select them, they're highlighted. And when you look at your in-game radar, you can see who's nearby and where they're going. You can also see a detailed map of the area. You can see various statistics about nearby players and monsters. So all of this seems harmless because it's a game, right? But when people log off they re-enter reality and have to come to the realization that all of those helpful information tools in the game are not available in real-life. This leads them to wish it were. They want to know where their child is 24/7 just like how they can know where someone is in an online virtual world.

I predict that the real world will look and behave more and more like virtual worlds do. I don't mean real-life will be a game, I mean that there'll be heaps and mounds of information about EVERYTHING around us. EVERYWHERE we go we'll be able to use these information tools. It will be a hybrid reality. People nowadays would be opposed to the information, but it'll be commonplace in the future.

People in the past could cope without this information because that's the world they grew up in. They adapted to it through trial and error. They're like fish in the ocean that're adapted to the ocean. But if you place fish adapted to the ocean in open air, they'll die quickly unless they can breathe it. The same thing would happen if you grabbed someone from 90 years ago and placed them into today's world. They would not understand our obsession with information and control. They would not have the education to cope. They might not die like a fish would, but they'd not thrive on it.

This information technology has opened the floodgates and now we're swamped with information. We adapt or we don't or the world goes backwards. If the world moves forward then things continue to change. People will grow to need this information like a hunger just as submarines NEEDED sonar when it was invented. Or just as emergency responders NEEDED radio when it was invented. Or just as people NEEDED phones when they were invented. This is a neverending thing. Each separate generation is like a separate species or something, each adapted to a different environment.

The question I have is how will humans respond if progress is exponential? At some point progress would be so great that humans cannot keep up. Will evolution favor rapidly changing humans? Or will evolution give some slack so humans can keep pace? If technology greatly exceeds our ability to use it well then doesn't this hint that terrorism could be deadly? (like a child with a loaded weapon) Or what about industrial accidents? Hell, what about traffic accidents or gun use laws?

As an example of how things outpace our ability to keep up is age. As we age, everything slows down. Hence, we fail to maintain our steady progress forwards. In this case, the inhibitor is age. But in the case of our ability to fully comprehend our technology and information, I'm unsure. I'm guessing that we can fall behind and that this can result in deaths, accidents, wars, strife and extinction.

When I read cases like this, it makes my blood boil. We see children left in homes with parents that are unfit parents all the time. It seems like some deadbeat parents get unlimited chances to continuously screw their kids up without reprecussions, yet we see good parents have issues like this. I'm not saying all poor parenting gets ignored or vice versa, but when it does and the excuse is they are erring on the side of caution, shouldn't good parents get the same benefit? It just makes me wonder sometimes if the goal isn't to make sure we have as many messed up youth as possible to ensure reliance on the system.

Well, to chuck water on everyone here:

In the past five years I've seen two kids hit by cars (fortunately minor) and there have been four attempted child abductions within a five mile radius of my home. Found out about one of these from the cops going door to door in my street; the kids had been in their front garden. I've also seen two fatal road accidents involving children in the past thirty years.

I too used to bike everywhere as a kid. There was WAY less trafiic on the road. Also didn't wear a helmet, and a did a whole bunch of things I wouldn't let my kids do now as I understand the risks, and the risks are much greater with traffic then they were thirty years ago.

Talking to adult female friends (forties): several have admitted to being sexually assaulted by older children, and one was nearly abducted as a child by a trucker. People making an opportunistic grab for lone kids happens more often than most people realise and did so in the past too. They just didn't say anything about it .

Lets face it, our parents didn't really grasp the risks out there. I'm not speaking from media fear mongering, but personal experience here.

Life would be so much easier if everyone lived in constant fear. Safety >>>> Happiness.

Perhaps this is due to spite on the neighbors part.
I can't really see anyone calling the police over two kids on the street with scooters.
I'm willing to bet there is more to this story than the article is telling us.
