Hey all, my buddy and I are planning a trip to Las Vegas from about Jan 16-20. While there, I plan on gambling and taking a side trip to Rachel and the area 51 lookout area. My buddy doesnt care for this stuff so he'll be in the casino, but I'm gonna make the trip out there, anyone interested in coming along?
I'm figuring on going either the 18th or 19th. I'll get up to where the signs are, but I aint passing them lol
Any takers?

Are you talking about just going as far as you can drive the car on the road, or are you talking about driving out there and then hiking up Tikaboo? If you're thinking about doing the climb in January, reconsider unless you're very physically fit and have a boatload of cold weather gear ... along with a bus-sized telephoto lens for your camera. You can see the buildings from there, but at a distance of 26 miles. And the weather is very inhospitable in the winter.

I'm not in Vegas.

As Flyswatter mentioned, the road to Tikaboo is not advised in the winter. I you dig around a bit, you can track down a vimeo video from jb737 that did both the drive and hike up Tikaboo in the snow. Highly suggested you don't do this.

I have done the Powerline Overlook in January. After CES in fact. It is mighty cold car camping. It will certainly get into the 20s at night.

My point is you probably want to adjust the visit so you are around the range during the weekday rather than weekend, assuming you want to see more than just the signs.

I have been on TIkaboo on both a Saturday and Sunday. I've done hikes on Sunday because you still get to see he Janets on Monday morning. I did the hike on a Friday once and stuck around on Saturday AM. There is stuff to be learned about the base on a Saturday, but I rather not post it. Most of the time I do Tikaboo in mid-week.

I have snow photos at the front and back gate

I was around the range with a "media" person once in April and it was snowing. I thought the guy was going to freeze to death so I loaned him my down jacket and played tough guy saying the sweatshirt I had was enough. (It wasn't.) He was there in a T-shirt.

Nevada is a state where you can do stupid stuff. Assume nobody will save your arse. It makes sense to be prepared. Do the search and rescue team a favor and don't wear ammo. While I'm at it, don't "open carry" by the border. The consequences of accidentally crossing the border with a firearm is something you don't want to deal with. Every few years some dumb ass hunter jumps the fence at the TTR. Of course, the federal prisons are much better than the state prisons.

It never hurts to have extra water in the car.

Great video, got a question tho:

Dude, what was with the ACU's??

Well because we love the ACU, couldn't find them over here in Belgium, so we bought them in Nevada

It appears that you visit nevada at least one time each year...You should try being there at night next year, maybe you will see some interesting stuff in the night sky above area 51. Star for your excellent report.

Yea, we made some friends in Rachel (Farmers), and to be honest i loved the lonelyness of Rachel, and it's one of my dreams to come and live there or at least stay for a longer period, so much to see and explore !
