Or, a lot more likely, they are pulling designations out of the air, and making explanations up. There's no reason for them to "deliberately place them close". What's the point if the only people that know anything about them are the people working on them? They aren't putting this info out on the internet for people to find if they look hard enough.

The X-22A was a VTOL research aircraft built by Bell in the 1960's, you can go see it in a museum if you want. The claims about the X-22A being a super-secret anti gravity craft were just over-excited misinterpretation of what a VTOL X-plane means that got blown out of proportion by a few idiots on the internet with no real knowledge. Just like happens when contrails get called chemtrails

The prototype for the Raptor was the YF-22, you may be confusing the F-35, the progenitor of which was an X plane called the X-35, but this is the only time this has happened. But as you rightly say, designations do not get re-used.
