I've been out of work since 08 when the company moved south, fought cancer this past year, Hubby is disabled. Future looks scary. Just want you to know I'm thinking of you and your family and praying things change for the better. Hugs!

And if anyone here owns their own business, please hire legal Americans!!

Quite a situation we find ourselves in. Another thing we never hear about are all the working-class young people just turning 18 and trying to break into the workforce and start their lives, and no one will hire them for one bs reason or another(such as a dishwashing position requiring 2 years of restaurant experience and multiple references, instantly disqualifying introverts that would otherwise make great workers), and the older they get the more impossible it becomes to find that first job, they'll hear something like "What, have you been on vacation all this time?" and shown the door. They'll eventually just give up. They are not counted in the official unemployment statistics. It's all pretty demoralizing.

Simple. They want us all to reach the status of hopelessness and desperation. We are going to tear each other to pieces unfortuneately....that is how I see it all going...I foresee myself resulting to some really negative "oddjobs" if things don't start picking up...which really sucks because I'm not that kinda person.
I will say though I am a little anticipant to see just what happens..
Cross your fingers for something miraculous to 720 this world back into the right direction.
I'll be sending some good vibes out your way, even though I should save some for myself

Best of wishes to you randyvs

3 years ago i was let go from my job after 8 years of employment due to "budget cuts"..
I could not find a job to save my life...so i took a chance and did a bit of studying at my local
mom and pop thrift stores, swapmeets/flea markets and yard sales, i found a good number of cheap
items such as old western shirts and worn cowboy boots for a few dollars and got myself
an ebay account and basically started selling junk! I make more money selling other peoples
junk than i did at my 9 to 5 job..just an idea i figured id share. I think the key is finding stuff
you really know about and just going from there. People buy just about anything on ebay.
Hope this helps you a bit.

The Trickle Down of Wealth Theory which the Republicans promote was really the trickling down of piss while they looted the treasury and Wall Street and Banking system. The rich got richer and the poor got pissed on. When little money goes back into companies and is instead taken out in the form of outrageous bonuses and pay for the management, the worker ends up with no job, such as yourself and your wife. So... who wants to go back to the tired old theory that only worked when you borrow money from China at the same time you cut taxes for the wealthy? BTW, there are jobs here in Wyoming and eastern Idaho!

The concept of the "American dream" was bs penned up by an anti constitutional leftist.

As per the OP, try and find self employment as a handyman, or try and use your skills in a way to start a business in today's economy. As per your wife, erm what? In some states it is illegal for an employer to say why they terminated a person. And since you believe your wife was fired because of her pension(I am assuming she is older then 50) you can try a) a defamation of character lawsuit and b) age discrimination lawsuit.

You know maybe its not job performace but rather that they just want to lay off workers, and out of the probably 20+ applicants your wife didn't get the job.

Probably nothing personnel but really not getting a job doesn't exactly mean they hate the person, just that they have maybe more than one applicant and cannot really just choose them all.

Sure your annoyed but really just keep trying, years of experience of course helps, but theres so many other factors, and maybe you jumping the gun and whining about it at the first instance is a thing. Well, that last statement was because you obviously cracked it at your wife not being instantly given the job, but well there is more than one applicant per job that comes around.

Ok sorry I did at first read about the background check but obviously if it was negative then they must of had a good reason. What reason? Why exactly would they state this? Thats the point... As her Husband whatever was stated against her you would defend and etc... But really they would not just state crud against her without reason...

It's good to see a thread where we are all able to share without being insulted. This is a good sign, because in the end, I think we will band together in some way shape or form. Sure, some people might be out for just themselves, but I still believe in the good people who will help one another get through the dark times ahead.

Our dreams took a turn two years ago. My husband was just about to finish his bachelor's degree, when he was told he could not continue unless he finished up 1 1/2 years paying out of pocket. Being that we don't have this kind of money, he cannot finish school. He went through a period of feeling humiliated. He desired so much to support his family and bring us out of our perpetual financial struggles. He felt his dream was a rug, ripped right out from under his feet. But then, he got up and brushed himself off and moved forward, taking odd jobs, never complaining, and remaining as optimistic as one can be in this situation. I admire my husband quite a bit, because many times when I felt like giving up, he never has.

We both understand where our lives are going now, and we have made peace with it. Money is not everything. When we die, there certainly will not be a Uhaul following us to our place of burial. You can't take it with you.

I know what is coming, and I am as prepared for it as I can be. I have been told for two years now that 2013 is going to be a year of hell.

I choose to not see this as our end, but our beginning. I will fight, I will sustain, and I will do what I can for my family.

Too many people are going to get lambasted by the big bomb drop of reality that is about to come crashing down on them soon. Our country, our lives, and everything is about to shift and change dramatically. So many people are not going to make it through this, and many will. Whatever comes, I believe we must support each other as best as we can. Give what you can, do what you can.

The jobs here are extremely tough and competitive to get. I'm talking, busing tables, washing dishes, or working as a cashier in a store. Teens are competing with people in their 20's, 30's, 40's, and 50's for these jobs now. I see more older people working in fast food than I ever have in my life. Teens are being turned away in some cases, in favor of a 30 something with more experience behind them. This does worry me for our youth.

People without work can be virtually alienated from the rest of society. It is a sad situation we all face when the best we can do is earn poverty wages because 'we' must be on par with the workers in China. It used to be Mexico, or was that India?

I commiserate with you and everyone here about the lack of decent paid work, no make that just work in many places. But with respect, I don't agree with your plea to employers to take on 'legal Americans'. It's like Darkstar said the page before, there's work in Saskatoon if you come up that way - and presumably if you are American that is still fine too. Same in Australia, there's work where the mines are, if you are lucky. Sounds like more work in Saskatoon than at the top end of Aussie though, by far. Over in Australia they are being told their jobs are going to be taken by people from Asia.

It is all grand BS serving the purposes of the elites who want to chop down the conditions of the workers to what they were back in Charles Dickens times. We, us workers, are being made to pay for the results of the gambling of the financiers and banks, the fraudulent casino that is the derivative market and all of its billions of losses we now know about since 2008. Don't fall for their manipulations.

The reason I don't like the idea of 'legal Americans' or 'legal Australians' is that is precisely what we are being told to think by our governments. Though on the face of it seems fair enough, it is reactionary stuff. Divide them and rule them. You know what? The Mexicans coming across the border only want to work, and when they do they add to the economy, and that pays taxes that pays for services that should be there for you to use. They are in the same boat you are in. It no longer matters whether you live in America or Vietnam or Australia. We are all being told we should work for single digit figures an hour. And that is not enough for anyone to live on.

It is only when workers everywhere realise they are united by their plight that they can ever hope to come together to change this world for the better. Don't fall for the nationalist BS. That is only there to divert you from the real cause of your grief, the political pandering to big business, and worse nationalism is going to get your children into another world war. Time to get done with this nation state world and no I am not in favour of a one world order. I am in favour of true democracy, where we elect our own leaders from amongst ourselves, and where we get to share the benefits of all this science and technology we only mostly glimpse on the TV.

OP kudos for a really good thread. Flag and star for you.

I also have wife and kids. Every radio station here has ads all day for employers seeking warm bodies. I work over 100 hours a week and rarely get any days off. Do I wish it were different? Yes but I must feed my family. It is hard work, both mentally and physically. I swing a 14lb sledge hammer two hours a day and operated equipment 16 to 24 hours in a day with a few cat naps. I have a BS degree but now use my body instead of my mind. I do what it takes. Check out the Odessa American classified ads for jobs and good luck. Do not give up. There is tons of work in ND, south and west Texas.

I'm so far from giving up I don't even know what it means. If jobs are that abundant in Texas ? I'm there tell me where to go. My last job was in El Paso, Texas six months ago. I'll go there in a heart beat.

Mount up people, when are any of us here going to get the courage to start resisting? Stop feeding the Big Corp your money, find different paths! There are tons of things we can do to resist. Heck start protests! I dont see anyone protesting government oppression or Corporate greed! NO ONE!

I do see a herd of girls protesting same sex marriage!

But none of us here have the balls to protest what the problem really is!

The real problem is that everything that is happening to everyone is someone else's fault. Why don't we start looking at what we have become and realize that nothing is anyone's else's fault. What I have learned through many years of study, meditation, and discovery is that everything that happens to a person is the simple fact that the universe is returning to the people the opportunity to set things right. Just as the planet is dealing with our ignorance of our ability to rule ourselves and control our emotions and actions, by reacting with storms, earth changes, and weather.

If you want to really find a job I have the solution. It is a solution that when it is really believed and practiced with faith will result in a job or better. WE all have talents that we know of and we all have talents that are latent. God says if we will call on him, demand from him answers and help he will deliver. Because we have free will he cannot help us unless we ask. Like the birds of the air, they worry not about where they will sleep, what they will eat. Ask and though shalt receive. It might not come right away but through practice and purifying of the heart He will answer.

So, each individual only brings suffering upon itself, and it's up to the individual to appease the gods if it wants success? This looks like both blaming the victim and a rain dance.
