Now if this consular post was to be recognised, it would have to meet the above conditions--being that there was a transition of government at the time; I would find it hard for any state to set up an official consular post in such a climate, but I could be wrong??

And, you are. Digging for fodeder without checking the facts adds nothing to the veracity, or the lack of it to the original post.

One could start by going to the Libyan Tansitional Government's website.
www.ntclibya.org...

Or, just paying attention to world affairs, instead of YouTube and Wikipedia:
Libya's transitional rulers hand over power to elected assembly (8/12)

Libya Protests Spur Shake-Up in Interim Government (1/12)

Libya's NTC announces new interim government (11/11)

Try harder.

I was checking facts, I picked up the closest dictionary to where I am sitting and looked up the above terms. I did not know anything about this until reading this thread and I thought to look into it.

Thank you, but I find LexisNexis to be more trustworthy than a website that cant even qualify for a government top-level domain. (also I avoid sites that use things like: "All in One SEO Pack 1.6.13.2 by Michael Torbert of Semper Fi Web Design"--view page source if you dont believe me). I did a whois on the domain too...

I did not reference either youtube or wikipeadia, I mentioned my sources of information--one being the UN, the other LexisNexis. Neither are user-generated content like wiki or youtube.

Try harder.

Ok, I'll look further, I'll let you know what I find

Constantly!

Edit: AND its a wordpress site, not that I have anything against wordpress--its just it seems a bit lightweight to be used as a CMS for a legitimate government agency

You may be able to get a translation of the official government site, www.pm.gov.ly..., but it doesn't really matter.

The main point is that we appointed an official representative to Libya; and his residence, by definition, is a "consulate."

The premise of the thread is not correct.

Would this also hold true for the US "embassy" in Taiwan?

Why I ask, is that if the Libyan transitional government is not a recognised government, then the diplomatic mission is invalid?

Is this the case? I only just started to look into this after reading this thread, so I am in no way an expert on international law

Here's WaPo's take on it, based on local and U.S. contacts:

The Benghazi compound was an anomaly for U.S. diplomatic posts. It was not a formal consulate and certainly not an embassy. It was a liaison office established before Gaddafi’s ouster. It was staffed by the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations, a State Department office that dispatches government officials to hardship posts for short tours.
In Libya, security was lax before attack that killed U.S. ambassador, officials say

So, not a "formal consulate," but a State Dept. "liaison office."

How does this matter when it comes to providing security (see linked story)?

That's the whole point, whether it was a tent full of State Department staffers and an envoy or a full on Embassy, it was still a U.S. government interest and should have been protected as such.

They have entire platoons of high risk protection specialists at Bragg and even more working directly for the SD, why weren't they used?

A couple of Suburbans full of Xe guys could have even made a difference.

Clinton dropped the ball and wants to shift blame to a U-tube video that 99% of the Libyan public haven't even seen.

I say Clinton and not Obama because he has a history of leaving these decisions to others so he can disavow them later if things go bad, like now for example.

I was about to make a Benghazi thread. Because I was wondering, "what happened to Benghazi news?"

Is it all still up in the air? Isn't it?

If not... whats the conclusion? In laymen terms plox.

All of you are missing the point about Benghazi - the problem with it is that the military was told to "stand down" and not "rescue" or help with the - now, as the call it - the "terrorist attact".

Why in God's name was our embassy(?) in war-torn Libya not protected? Why did the obozo administration fire 5 top ranking military men right after they ignored the order to "stand down"?

One theory is that the ambassador was supposed to be kidnapped in order to trade hostages for the blind shiek.
The retired seals "protecting" the embassy shot back, as is their nature to do, when attacked - thus screwing up the "kidnapping" which pissed off the "hostage takers" (What they're shooting at us? They're not supposed to do that!) and in anger over being duped by the obozo administration, they severely tortured, sodomized, and killed the ambassador.

I was surprised not even Rush asked about the 5 generals/admirals that were relieved of their duty, inclding how quickly they threw Petraeus under the bus. That's the real questions about benghazi.
