The glass beach at Ft Bragg.

Until 1967 locals dumped all their garbage on this beach. Then they decided to move the dump site inland and cleaned up all the big stuff like cars and washing machines.

But there was no way they could pick up all that glass.

So mother nature stepped in and left something very cool.

Just goes to show that Mother Earth knows how to take care of herself. How pretty!

I found this bit interesting

Rounded glass and rocky pebbles on Glass Beach. Visitors to the area say that every year there is a little less glass since so many people pocket the pretty pieces.

So now people are taking the trash they dumped there back home after the sea prettied it up a bit

Exactly, the cycle is complete.

Some tiedye wearer will be making jewelry out of it soon.

How do you use a snipping beach for snip snipped dump? What the math. At least it was mostly pre plastic

We also have Agate Beach right up the coast from Glass Beach. There, you can find agates, moonstones and bits of jade gently polished by the sea. Yes, I do love northern California ... the TRUE north, not the central part that calls itself north.

One of my favorite beaches i have ever been to. Nothing really like it. It is hard to imagine someone dumping garbage in such a beautiful spot.

We've got something similar in my hometown of Petawawa Ontario. There was a Pepsi plant by the river, and I guess they just dumped bottles and broken glass down the hill and into the river. The result is what the locals call Glass Island. Great spot for fishing, and diving for lures.

I have a small (about 18 in. sq) area near my driveway that is covered with Ft Bragg glass beach glass. Went to Ft. Bragg for our honeymoon. I have heard that it is no longer allowed to collect it?

That is correct. It is now illegal to take the glass.

.... What a damn surprise this is.

... This is my home town, born and raised. I really am blown away that my little town is on the front page of ATS, very uncanny to me.

Sadly almost all of the blue glass has been taken though, damn you tourists.


Fun fact: The Koche brothers own the entire headlands of Fort Bragg, which is guarded by 24/7 security + barbed wire fences.

P.S: The glass is very illegal, and also cursed; stay away.

Great stuff. Pity the same can't be said about plastics.

Yes it is. The town used to be pretty damn backwards. The mill used to exist right next to this area as well.

This is just evidence that beauty can evolve from tragic stupidity.

Amazing that even mother nature knows how to turn trash into treasure, yet most humans cant recycle a plastic bottle.
