Police have used tear gas on Sydney protesters who swept through the CBD as world-wide demonstrations triggered by a US film portraying the prophet Muhammad as a womaniser and paedophile reached Australia.

Up to 500 protesters stormed through the city as protesters worked their way through Pitt Street before moving to Hyde Park amid a heavy police presence.

This has really upset me and is really testing my tolerance. I'm atheist and like/hate all religion no matter the persuasion. I try to not let the extremist elements change my perceptions but I am really struggling.

It is testing my tolerance and opinions on Islam when I see signs like "Behead all those who insult the prophet" being carried through Sydney CBD.

Religions are made fun of all the time yet I don't recall the last time a number of members of any religion have protested like this and carried such disgusting signs.

This is probably more of a rant on my part as it is testing my commitment to not judge the many on the actions of a few (or 500). I have not heard word of any Muslim leaders condemning these actions yet. I sincerely hope that many will speak out against this kind of hatred displayed otherwise I fear this will result in further troubles i.e. Cronulla riots of not too long ago.

It is the Extremists with the beheading beliefs that SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED IN OUR COUNTRY.

I dont hate muslims, I hate The Extremists like that. If you want to have that belief, fair enough a right is a right, but DONT have such beliefs in a country that has TAKEN YOU IN!

Its these extreme people who we stupidly let in that give the rest of the muslims a bad name!

Why have they been let in to our country!!!!!????

This goes to show just how much religion twists the minds of its followers. Why get worked up over something so stupid?

Is rioting going to make the movie go away? No it's not, so what is the point of all the violence? It makes me sad to know just how hypnotized most of the world is.

Just because we are advancing in our technology doesn't mean that is the same case for society. If that were the case religion would be abolished and Society and Technology would soar in sync.

ahhh

If only....

In light of the events of this week it seems that the entire Muslim world has gone even more insane than normal and its all because of a movie that they find "offensive". Well if it offends them then don't watch it, its as simple as that. However these fanatics won't ignore it because they look for any excuse they can find to inflict and spread their hatred and violence.

I really feel that given the events of this week, a powder keg is about to ignite and things are about to get real nasty. This violence and protest is spreading across the globe and I honestly think that we will see terrorist attacks against the west and western interests.

Many people assume that Islam is a religion of peace corrupted by a misguided minority.

In fact Muhammad authorized the assassination of people who criticized Islam, according to the first biography on his life written by a devout Muslim in 768 AD.

• Muhammad authorised the murder of a number of poets (male & female) who had mocked him. One poet was a mother sleeping with her young children. The Muslim assassin had to move the child aside before thrusting his dagger into her chest. Another victim was a male poet who was, according to Muslim sources, over 100 years old. Mohammed then absolved the Islamic murderers of any wrong doing.

• He also had a propensity to execute prisoners who had been political opponents in the past. One such man had fallen foul of Muhammad when Muhammad was in his early days due to being a better story teller than Muhammad,. "Who will look after my young daughter?" cried the man, moments before he was executed. Muhammad then cursed him.

The Life of Muhammad (768 AD) by Ibn Ishaq

Sadly, the violent Muslims are the ones emulating its founding prophet in both spirit and actions.

I've never assumed anything about any religion. The tiny bit of knowledge I have about all religions is that they all have their archaic ideologies and mantra and when taken literally are quite barbaric.

I had just hoped, possibly naively, that we were progressing.

Were are all those posters who claim Islam is so tolerant.........
They are a bunch of cry babies the whole religion is based in hate and intolerance and the second something is against them they cry and cry and cry.

Just like a child you need to let them cry it out.

And if they continue to make everything such a big deal and use violence I say let them reap what they sow.

When we deny any group the right to protest; we are denying ourselves accountability to government.

I certainly do not endorse any religious ideas, but I do believe strongly in a separation of church and state, and a right of the populace to peaceful protest. I find these to be core principals to the democracy in which we live.

I know I will be flamed by the sensationalists and the fundamentalists as a supporter of Islam, but the truth is I think they are just as crazy and deluded by faith as Christians are.

I agree but for me it's that anger towards non-muslims that is the sticking point. As shown above, that sign destroys any legitimacy this protest may have had.

I realy feel like i'm living in a dream world right now, or more like a nightmare state.

The events don't just annoy me, but the fact the media is loving having this kind of story to pump out every 30 minutes with the most minor updates they could possibly give us is GRRR!

I don't follow any religious beliefs, more into faith for myself, but it kind of upsets me a little of people push their hate towards those that believe in something oldschool, and their right to protest (don't get me wrong, this is over the top).

I'm pretty certain for all of us non-believers if the world flipped over and forced us to believe in some form of God, we'd all be out protesting in the street calling for heads.

Twitter updates aren't promising:

Getting really nasty here. #protest #Sydney

Violence erupting. All on. Passers by taking cover. Nearby shoppers in shock.

So let me get this straight you are alright with them calling for heads to be removed over a stupid movie.

You call for tolerance towards the very people who are the least tolerant. How stupid can ya be? I wonder if they would accept your lack of faith.

Islam preaches tolerance, tolerance in that all others should be tolerant of them and their ways but they refuse to show any tolerance to others. Islam is a religion of hypocrisy, just like the hypocritical false prophet that founded the religion.

To be honest I am not religious. You can worship whatever you want as long as it does not infringe on another's right to do the same.

Why does Islam have such a high percentage of nut jobs? Why don't the moderate ones call for calm?
