Yes, they should not have marched with the teachers, they should've held their own march.

Socialism is unpopular in America, and won't earn these teachers any sympathies. When Socialists march with others, it tends to muddle the point of the other people's marches.

That's why they should march alone.

They probably should as unions are a product of capitalism.

Why should they have a problem to march with them? Are socialists boogeymen that have cooties?

What a topic THAT would be eh?

Has that ever happened anywhere in the world?

No it hasnt, which is why no child leaves school a financial genius. Had they been taught capitalist principles at school everyone would be rich.

Yeah, capitalism couldn't exist if everyone were rich.

And you get brainwashed with capitalistic principles starting at a young age in the USA. The whole incentive they preach to you in school is "Don't drop out, high school graduates make more money....then go to college, so you can make more money".

Its absurd the illiteracy rates in HS grads and they want more money?

Yeah, they are probably making too much already. Fire all of them. Who needs educated kids anyway? There are private schools. Send your kids there. Oh, you do not have kids in the Chicago school system, do you? Yep, the teachers make way too much. May those kids be the ones to care for your health in the future. I am sure you will not need anyone that can read to keep you alive ever.

Might want to edcuate yourself.........in chicago where these people are on strike , they turned down a 16 percent increase to their wage..........a wage that is higher then anywhere else in the US, with the median wage for a teacher there before benefits is 70k+ a year.......I repeat...70 thousand dollars a year, BEFORE benefits....are you kidding me?

Youll say "oh well but its a tough job" , except they arent doing their job look at the deplorable education stats coming out of their schools, some of the lowest in the entire country, and they want MORE? Its despicable what these teachers are doing.....

They arent in it for the kids, they arent trying to help, they are greedy and devoted to their own interests, what teacher who wants to help and loves what she does, would REFUSE to teach kids, and help them and instead go on strike? Not to mention the boggling number of them involved, they arent worried about the kids, plain and simple....

Like the above poster said..........FIRE THEM ALL! Look at the average wage in America right now, its no where close to that, with so many people out of jobs and struggling to find ANYTHING, and these people strike because they arent making enough?! They need people there who do what they love educating our youth, and who will do their damn job.....

Teachers use to teach because they wanted to help people, because they cared about the future of our country, because they had moral fiber, and heart..........not for a new car, or longer paid vacations....

These people are scum..........

Next time you decide to make a wise crack.........how bout doing some research

I'm not surprised. I wonder how Rahm likes being mayor of that corrupt thug-haven?

The teachers are not the problem. They are oft times demonized, it's a mistake. The unions are the problem.

... and the teachers make up the unions. The NEA is full of thugs.

No, unless you live in a right to work state if you are a teacher you have no say, you automatically join the union, you can not opt out, you can not withhold union dues. Do not think there is no difference between the union leaders and the teacher in the classroom.

The theme of socialism is “take” — take from those who have and distribute to those who have not. Lately, this action is couched in such words as “fairness” or “redistribute.” False prophets of this thinking assure us everyone will benefit equally. Taking is never right. “Take” is the twin brother of “steal.”

Socialism encourages idleness and playing it safe. Why work long hours, save, plan and go without to achieve if someone is going to take your achievements away from you? Why should I start early, stay late, work, play, learn, if someone will give me the wealth of another?

Socialism is simplistic in its thinking. If someone is well to do or prospering immediately they are branded as evil or a person who has been taking advantage of the less fortunate. If someone is poor her or she is called a victim who has been taken advantage of by the rich. Socialism refuses to recognize the truth that someone might be wealthy or poor because of the choices her or she made. There are many reasons for wealth or poverty and couch everything in terms of class warfare is simplistic.

Socialism is wrong because it divides. It is always spoken of in terms of the rich versus the poor, or we class people as to their gender, age, social standing, ethnicity or religion. Americans need to avoid the class warfare of socialism. We are all Americans with opportunities to learn, work, try to achieve, dream and to build.

Socialism offers nothing good to us

fire them all !!!
this is Chicago isn't it ?? they have Oprah, what do they need teachers for anyway ??

in case ppl are missing the truth here, education was more effective when we had less teachers earning less money ... 8th graders back then could count and read, at the same time even.

currently, too many 'grads' need a calculator or "app" to make change .

yep, and here's an interesting breakdown of those "mostly southern" right to work states.
isn't it a bit ironic that the major political and financial failures eminate from forced unionized states ???

I keep saying this...it should be illegal for anyone who works for taxpayer money to be in a union or strike.....no unions in the public sector period!

And I am speaking as the wife of a public sector union worker....

The federal government does not allow it..ie: IRS etc

Should be the same for state governments...the public sector workers in unions make more money than the taxpayers who pay their salary....so wrong.

If you want to get rich...work in the public sector or open your own business. I thought teachers taught for the love of it and for the children and all they ever say is gimme gimme gimme.

The chorus teacher in our district makes $120,000 a year!!!!! WTF???

And this is a relatively small district compared to Albany and Troy NY next door. Are you kidding me? Her life's not even in danger, she goes to school and gets kids to sing.

not sure about you Sonny1, but doesn't that breakdown closely resemble the North vs South at some other particular time in our recent history (less than 200yrs) ??

if i remember correctly weren't they called "union" and "confederate" back then ??
so really, what's changed in all these years ??

It's not guilt be association when the teachers are wearing Che t-shirts while marching and they don't even really know who he is when asked. Fricken brilliant!

i'll have to take your word for that as i'm too tired to research that statement.
however, living through the 70s in PA and down south since the latter 80s, personal experience would encourage me to agree.

ETA: it wouldn't surprise me considering the South was more prosperous than the North, way back when too ... if i remember correctly, the South was the 4th prosperous region in the world, at that time.
