After huge White House construction job, West Wing emerges little changed

After nearly two years and $86 million worth of noisy and disruptive construction, the West Wing has emerged from its visual seclusion remarkably unchanged. And deep underground, whatever has been built there remains shrouded in mystery.

So what did they build? Why the secrecy?

Dont the American people have a right to know? After all, it was done with our money (well our debt burden).

Because the president lives there, and if they were building some new fancy escape tunnel, you might want to ensure his safety by not disclosing these facts

Or Obama had a wicked man cave built and does not want the tax payers to know

Thats a valid point. They may not want to disclose an escape route or something intended for his protection. However, we are already aware of one bomb shelter (from the same article):

The existing White House bunker, known as the Presidential Emergency Operations Center, is under the East Wing and dates to the Roosevelt administration.

So what is it?

More than likely it was an underground basketball court.
Rather than play at the FBI courts.
He can play without leaving home.

Those who get to make the decisions about the direction of the US in the world are doing a good job of making enemies.

Their are making sure they are safe and the heck with the average person. They have figured out the lack of border security is going to be a real big problem from the bad guys.

Maybe without conspiracy... Uhm rotten wood maybe badly scuffed marble.. The gold trim was tarnished beyond cleaning.. They would have to replace everything inside and still make it look the same on the outside. Contractors often get overpaid for Government jobs. Doesn't make sense. Government Always pay over the top for silly things. Take wrenches for example. They will pay 300 dollars for a wrench then toss it when it breaks.. Why not buy a craftsmen wrench Costs 13.50 and has lifetime warranty.. Anyways maybe it's a simple thing. And not a super secret missle silo..

Moderator edit of Xposted quote

Maybe that's why ever since I first saw Barrak H Obama at the DNC way back when he gave the keynote (was that 2000?), my Gaydar has gone off every time... I'm not gay but I'm usually right about that. A bidet would go a ways toward confirming that for me.

There is a documentary telling of the many renovations over the years. This picture was shown in it.. i forget it's name. They did gut this wing and many others, replaced anything that was old and weak with steal beams and fortified the structure big time. They wanted to make as much of the building as they can bomb proof to the best extent they could. Over the years, they are continually upgrading these efforts as well as rebuilding the various secret intelligence rooms with newer high tech spy stuff. Almost every President wants to make his contribution to these efforts he can call his namesake. They try to out do each other like a game.
