Yeah strange, with everything going on over there right now you'd logically have to assume there is more to this.

I have noticed the chi-bots on other forums I frequent doing their best to downplay his absence. I wonder why?

Maybe it actually was his back. People in pain will look like they've been sick for a while.
If you've ever strained your back, you know how debilitating it can be. Maybe he didn't want to show signs of ageing or weakness.
