Afghanistan has been the battle-ground of War-Lords for centuries. Tne villagers -like in medieval Europe- are álways in the middle, getting
slapped-about.
To them the Americans are júst another War-Lord, with bigger guns. They don't give a hoot about 9/11. They do not want to anger ányone in this
whole "Taliban vs. US" - because they damn well know they'll get into trouble, whatèver stance they take.
The fact that the elders feign not to know of 9/11 is wise in the current situation. They knów the far-reaching effect of TV, and also knów that,
might the say something about 9/11, even maybe condemn it, they will have a "visit" by the local Taliban, and several elders will end-up sans head,
in a ditch.
Éven the prominent Presence of American Military, does nót alleviate their fear of the Taliban.
Oh.. And by the way.. Why does that ding-dong of a soldier shakes hands with that kid, while the open end of the mzzle of his gun is pointing at the
kid....
Stupid stuff like that is seen as a provocation. In training it's slammed into one's head to sling the gun so as to not point at anyone, i.e.
Muzzle-down... Tsssk tssk...
