A study by Sweden"s Karolinska Institute has shown that using a cell phone for ten years or more put the user at greater risk for developing acoustic neuroma. This benign tumor if found on the auditory nerve. If the tumor occurred, it was usually confined to the side of the head that the user usually used.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Ten or more years of mobile phone use increases the risk of developing acoustic neuroma, a benign tumor on the auditory nerve, according to a study released on Wednesday by Sweden"s Karolinska Institute.

The risk was confined to the side of the head where the phone was usually held and there were no indications of increased risk for those who have used their mobile for less than 10 years, the Karolinska Institute said in a statement.

The institute, one of Europe"s largest medical universities and a clinical and biomedical research center, awards the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

"At the time when the study was conducted only analog mobile phones had been in use for more than 10 years and therefore we cannot determine if there results are confined to use of analog phones or if the results would be similar also after long-term use of digital (GSM) phones," it said.

The study looked at the usage of analog cell phones as digital ones are not as old. There is no data as of yet on their use and the increased cancer risk. The cellular phone industry maintains that there is no evidence to support an increased risk of cancer from the use of the phones.

There is a distinct possibility that cellular phone companies will have to face the same level of litegation that the Tabacco industry enjoys now. Thier claims of no valid research rings a bit hollow and looks and smells like the same propaganda the the industry funded "Tobacco Institute" that used to deny that cigarettes were harmfull.

The cell phone tumors cited are not in the brain. While pot may have some benifit it really is exagerated beyond belief. THC is avalible in a pharmcutical grade preperation. Not all, but the bulk of the MM crowd have aims on inching closer to legalization and this is thier first step.

HMMMM...when did cell phones first become widely used by the public and when did people start getting dumber? more fears to fear...pretty soon fear will give you cancer lol

Fear gives you heart attacks, high blood pressure strokes, kessel... That's just as bad.

But if the results of this study is accurate, it will be near catastrophical in the future. Hundreds of millions of people, or even more than one billion people use cell phones these days.

In the mean time, I have to make a phone call...

My feeling is something is bound to kill you one way or another. I have chronic conditions which are picking away at my health on a daily basis, so hearing this news ... though cause for concern ... didn't seriously bother me.

I have read and heard news that pointed to the same conclusions the study has and we still keep using them. People know cigarettes are bad ... people still buy them. I think it will be the same with cellphones. People usually prefer the convenience and tend to forget the consequences.

Just a quick point.

There was recently a study of the GSM phones that found the GSM towers had a similiar effect as ELF does to people who live close to them...
there is a thread on this somewhere, but the evidence looked convincing.
It was also a long term study that found cancer clusters in areas close to the towers...
And who hasn't felt the heat that radiates from a phone during a long cell call? if you can feel it on the outside... guess what... your brain feels it on the inside...
IMO that this is a perfect example of the tobacco propaganda wars...
we will soon see lots of lawsuits, but who to sue? everyone is getting bought out and traded... At&t isn't going to be in it any longer (which is a sure sign that they saw the tide rising).

If this is true, I will be sending in photos of a large golfball object somewhere under my skin. I talk about 5000 minutes a month on my cell. If this is true, I'm so screwed.
