I'd be more than happy to offer my house for any Japanese female refugees, in case Fuji goes.

I take female porn stars only though

QUAGMIRE?!? is that you? who else but quagmire!

on topic- everywheres going to blow eventually, yellowstone, fuji, fault lines
its just a matter of which one first?
place your bets!

Did no one get my last post about the magnetic poles changing? Isn't that when the magna runs the opposite way ? So...volcanos will explode! oH and yeah, the earth according to revelations is supposed to be swallowed by fire! ...so volcanos?the first time by ice and second time by fire! ? Does mt Fuji fall into this realm?

Pole-shifts would not affect magma flow. Pole shift, at best, would give us a few days/weeks with no "solid" protection from the sun's energy.

Honestly, Mt Fuji as an eruption would have some pretty serious consequences, nobody can laugh at a few hundred thousand dead, the economic impact would be felt and we would loose a degree or two of temperature

But it wouldn't be the end of japan let alone the world, in fact, i'd say the planet has a pretty good way about balancing itself...

At the moment the sun is very obviously in a period of being more active than normal, very likely the actual cause of these earthquakes and activity is this extra energy being put into the system, big earthquake, later large eruption, lots of ash enters the sky, we get a bit of a shield for the duration of this solar activity, everything works out fine.

Now in human terms, sure a few hundred thousand dead around Fuji, economic shutdown of Tokyo for a time, loss of crops again the next year this time due to low temperatures... it equals Millions of Dead globally perhaps... but again the planet has it's ways of keeping things in balance

Frankly I Just wish it wasn't Japan, I happen to really like Japan

Oh ..thanks for clarifying that..I was mistaken , and had read an article that the pole shift would reverse the flow of lava..with magnetic pull reversing or changing etc,.. Guess it was a bull**** article...thanks!

Pole shift has everything to do with magma, Scientists believe our Magnetic field is caused by the convection currents of the molten cores (aka magma) which are high in iron

On the other end, it would kill off a lot of species and blocking out the sun is hardly what I would classify as a benefit.

Though perhaps they could make GMO seeds that don't require the sun to sprout? Oh who am I kidding? Another terrible idea.

Pole shift affects the way magma revolves around the core. This doesn't necessarily mean that huge eruptions follow from this. In fact, so far, studies of the geological record do not back up major eruptive events following on from Pole Shifts.

Equally though, it cannot be dismissed. In short, we do not know enough to make solid predictions either way but from what has been gleaned so far, the biggest risk is from the magnetic shield collapsing for a period of several weeks. Even this is only bad if we get bombarded by space plasma, etc, during this period of having no shield.

I never said the whole was a good thing...just the one aspect of cooling Earth in general....that's the only good thing. I never intended people to think that I thought I volcanic eruption of epic proportions would be good for everything/everyone....I thought my post was specific enough but obviously it wasn't since at least two different people have commented sarcastically about how awful it would be. I never said it was an overall good. It just has the silver lining that in later years the Earth would generally be cooler and that isn't entirely bad. It's happened in the past and life rebounds and then they are in a much better situation in general. If you can survive the "mini ice-age" then chances are you will be better off for a while. That's all I was saying.

Everything has an equilibrium, even tectonic plates
dambs/cities/nuke tests and water affects tectonic plates greatly

sea levels rising puts pressure on land mass
snow melting lifts pressure in other places
floods put huge weight on land, water is heavy

shifts inside the planet happen

when an equilibrium is lost strong forces will find equilibrium again

since the tractor became common the trees where decimated fast
humans are meant to know if they breed like flies they die like flies

pole shifts are devastation at the extreme

they have happened in the past wiping the slate clean, very clean
during a pole shift the oceans try and stay where they are = waves miles high at thousand miles an hr

think about how water behaves

You are talking about a geological Pole Shift, something there is no evidence anywhere on the planet for. It is a theory backed up by NO geological evidence.

What there is plenty of evidence of is Magnetic Pole Shift. This is even recorded in the rock strata.

For magnetic Pole Shift see the geological record. For geological Pole Shift see Hollywood and Amazon.

No.

Magnetic pole shifting, a proven fact, has nothing to do with the movement of magma. Geological pole shifts, not proven, WOULD affect magma/etc.

Magnetic pole shifts are when the field inverts itself. Magnetic fields are not "stuck" to the physical alignment of a planet or any object. For example. I can take a magnet in real life and change the fields without moving the objects.

The core of the earth, the solid, moon sized iron core that is hotter than the surface of the sun? That is solid and mostly iron. Spinning rapidly. The outer-core is liquid metal. Also spinning rapidly and with convection.

It is the convection and movement in the outer-core that creates the magnetic fields (or so theorized...as we don't know for sure.)

Then we have the mantle, where magma is. Magma is not the outcore and magma does not make magnetic fields we depend on. Density of it -can- affect magnetic and gravetic fields... but it is not dependent on the actual magnetic field from the outer core.

The switching of magnetic poles has nothing to do with the actual location of any part of the Earths' interior. You can swap and move poles all you want without actually moving the planet's insides. Even more-so, a magnetic switch is near instant... worse case scenario we get higher UVs for a few days.

Good job on explaining that, I watched a special on the phenomena recently and your right on the money.
Man I hope fuji don't blow those poor Japanese have been through enough these days. Seems like they are always packing and relocating.
edit on 12-9-2012 by Lonewulph because: Left out a letter in the narrative, who wants to know? You watch'n me? I ain't no pole dancer

i often wondered how they figure something can be hotter than the surface of the sun and be a solid.... pressure perhaps? anyway it's all speculation as to whats inside the earth as no one know for sure.

Maybe its solid dirt..and the lava is a vein that flows around the earth..like we have with blood vessels? Weird thought...
