Obama will showcase his speech tonight at the DNC by comparing himself to FDR. Obama wants to be President for life, as FDR had 4 terms before dying in office. A little bit of history here: Hitler rose to power during FDR's tenor, the War Economy of World War II was the solution to the Great Depression, and 60 million deaths were a result of World War II. There's really nothing new here, do we really want to repeat history? BTW, here's a link to another thread about the realities of U.S. casualties between Republican Presidents and Democratic Presidents.

You know, the idea that Obama saved us from a depression is an interesting one, thanks. How would we go about testing that? A recession is a shrinking of the GDP's rate of growth for three quarters. My understanding is that a depression is a particularly long and nasty recession. (Sorry for using the technical economic terms.
)

i found an interesting chart which shows the change in the GDP over time, but the fun part is that you can set the time to show any time span you'd like. www.tradingeconomics.com... When I went there, I set the beginning for January 2008 and the end for September 2012.

What I saw was the huge hit the economy took, then I saw it recovering and breaking in to positive territory before Obama was even in office, or before his plans had any effect. The recovery rate went up for a quarter or two, then just sat there.

The conclusion I drew was that the recession was on it's way to ending under Bush, it continued on it's own steam for a few months under Obama, then the recovery was cut short and has stayed that way, as if someone had gone after the chart with a hedge clipper. (Ha! "Hedge" clipper, get it? A little brokerage humor.
Sometimes I just crack myself up.)

Long story short? Obama wasn't responsible for keeping us from a depression, but is responsible for a flat, sluggish recovery, the worst in over 70 years.

I'd be happy to hear where I've gone wrong. I don't want to accept false information or conclusions. Wouls you give me your take on it, please.

Wait, wait, wait... are you really trying to say that FDR's presidency is what caused Hitler to rise to power and caused World War II?

So which Fox News anchor are you?

FDR saved the nation, he did four terms because he needed to. If he did not run again in 1940 then an isolationist or fascist sympathizers (like those in the Business Plot to overthrow the government) could have won and the Second World War would have been won by the Axis Powers, which America would have most likely joined.

FDR's New Deal helped revive the nation as well as his Lend-Lease Policy. He hated Hitler from the very beginning. Without FDR's military aid Great Britain would have fallen and the Soviet Union would have been overrun and the United States would have been facing both Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany with only Canada and Australia to help.

FDR was the closest to a "Socialist" President we have ever gotten, Obama certainly isn't anywhere as far left-leaning as FDR.

Thanks Charles1952. Awesome and thorough post, as always.

The Obama speech tonight left me clueless. He mentioned FDR, but even FDR had a plan. Obama has been POTUS for 4 years and wants another 4 years without A REAL PLAN, just rhetoric. Obama has yet to explain how he will govern the next 4 years. His only plan is to BEAT ROMNEY.

Obama is no FDR. FDR had REAL SUBSTANCE, something Obama knows nothing about.

Then your memory is extremely selective (and wrong).

My BA thesis is about Roosevelt, I am more qualified to make statements about his Presidency than you are.

You accuse me of being a FOXNEWS anchor and EXTREMELY selective in my memory. And then you proclaim to have a "THESIS" of FDR as part of your bachelor of ARTS. Maybe you shouldn't have graduated. Make your case. Explain why 60 million people had to die under Roosevelt. Explain why the FDR recovery took so long. AND PLEASE, explain ALL REGULATIONS in place before the Great Depression. Since you only had a BA, feel free to take the whole weekend to do your research. And please don't be SELECTIVE and answer all these questions fully. Thanks in advance.

I can't tell if you are serious or just have heavy metal poisoning. I don't think that you even understand what a thesis or a BA is. Did you even go to college? If not, well you probably would have flunked out anyway based on your posts.

70 million people died because of factors that were beyond Roosevelt's control. He could not have stopped Hitler's rise to power nor could he have stopped Imperial Japan from attempting to create the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, at least not in his first two terms.

Roosevelt inherited a horrible situation, just like Obama did. But he fixed it, through rigorous social programs and public works. All of which put the United States in a position to begin a massive manufacturing effort come 1939.

The way that FDR handled the Great Depression and the War was remarkable. He kept the nation form tearing itself apart by giving the people Hope, he kept Hitler ans Hirohito at bay by massively increasing American manufacturing to supply the Allies. He opted for a Hitler First strategy that saved countless lives on the Eastern Front by keeping Hitler distracted.
