A loaded cargo jet bound for Spain with seven crew members aboard crashed into woods at the end of a runway at Halifax International Airport early Thursday after its tail snapped off during takeoff.

The fate of the crew wasn"t known, but a spokesman for MK Airlines of Britain said the situation looked grim given the fact the crash created a huge fireball in the pre-dawn sky.

"I understand from our people on the ground in Halifax that there may be no survivors," Steve Anderson said in an interview from Sussex, England.

Initial reports from eye witnesses indicate that the tail "snapped off" as the plane was accelerating down the runway. No reason to believe that terrorism was involved in any way, but the investigation is just getting under way.

New info : Initial reports from the scene suggest the jet's tail hit Runway 06 during takeoff before crashing into a wooded area near an industrial park. Pictures from the scene show a orange glow in the sky not far from a rural road.

The 747 was apprently loaded with seafood and tractors before it ended up in the rock quarry at the end of the runway. Halifax airport is closed for the day.

The plane was owned by MK Airlines Ltd. of Britain, so not our plane, unless you are British of course, which is where the subs came from....Uh oh.
